benkei
So I'm selling my beloved Rev2 MR2 n/a, and had my heart set on an MR2 Turbo, rev2 again. Insurance will allow it with no anal rape involved. Had a look at a few, and can get a tidy one for around £2k, which is my maximum budget... But earlier I had a thought... What other rwd jap cars are available for that price? Any as good looking, fun, and fast as the MR2 turbo? And interior wise, will they be as up-to-date, nice looking, or comfortable? Any thought or suggestions? hadyn
Also FC RX7 turbo would be a nice retro option too. I've read that they are actually more reliable than the FD rotary...
hadyn
Oh lets not forget the 2.5 1JZ GTE twin turbo Soarer either!!

Dave17
I sure wouldn't describe the MK2 MR2 interior as up to date or nice looking. It's an absolute sea of cheap plastic.

Old school jap metal! just had a quick look for an FC and couldn't find any I sure wouldn't describe the MK2 MR2 interior as up to date or nice looking. It's an absolute sea of cheap plastic. I don't know mate, the seats are half leather and half alcantara, the dash and other plastics are black and not gray, and the carpet is black too. Compared with some other cars I've looked at, they aren't that bad!! Especially with after market steering wheels and gear knob, they can look pretty good. chris2o2
I do like the mr2 but pushing it can get a bit scary at times . The 3sgte is a cracking engine in the tubby as well . 200sx would be tempting , unsure about them - maybe pm Jamesmark i believe he owns one still .... benkei
PM'd him I quite like the s14s, and I imagine a UK spec would be cheaper on the insurance...
Todd
I expect you to be biased Todd! Moi I'd actually buy a MX5 and give it a turbo conversion

benkei
I'd actually buy a MX5 and give it a turbo conversion I wouldn't be seen dead in an MX5! Unless I was in the passenger seat and the driver was a stunningly gorgeous girl!
jamesmark
200sx would be tempting , unsure about them - maybe pm Jamesmark i believe he owns one still .... I still have my 200sx. This is mine link. For the money they go for now there is not much you can get that is better in the performance car market. They are very easy to mod and very cheap to mod too, like the Supra it's almost seems an endless task when moding it is the same with the SX. However in saying that the first part of mods are done in stages where you chip the stock ECU: S14/S14a Stage 1 ECU upgrade (260-280bhp) S14/S14a Stage 1a ECU upgrade (270-290bhp) S14/S14a Stage 2 ECU upgrade (280-300bhp) S14/S14a Stage 2a ECU upgrade (290-310bhp) S14/S14a Stage 3 ECU upgrade (310-330bhp) S14/S14a Stage 3a ECU upgrade (340-360bhp) Have a look here, these guys are very respected in the SX world and really no other chip will ever be recommended other than the ones supplied and fitted by Horsham Developments. The good thing is as long as you buy the supporting mods (again see HD site as they tell you what you should have fitted) you can jump straight to Stage 3a. An SX that is it stage 3a will leave a BPU supra till probably well above banable speed. I am at Stage 1a iirc and I can keep up with a full BPU auto. So I would only consider going past Stage 3a if you are wanting silly power or need it for a particualr reason. Reading on SXOC a 3a car will see you to 60 in 4.5 seconds and top out well over 170mph. They are very practical too and the boot is quite big, when I go back home I rarely use the rear seats unlike what I always had to do with my Supra. The rear seats are useable too to a certain point obviously. The ride is good, mine is lowered but it is not too harsh on the road. The driving position is excellent and it is comfortable for those long drives back home to Scotland. The interior (dash) is as exciting as a wet T-Bag, but that is Nissan for you but if you are like me and not too bothered about how a dash looks (unless it is really awful) then that won't bother you. Looks wise I think it is a great looking car, it has just the right amount of presence. You have 2 types of S14. The S14 and S14a the best one is the S14a as it is more agressive looking. I have the UK Spec Touring which means it has leather, different bodykit and erm that is about it I think. Insurance for mr is appx £550, 31, 6 points and in a high crime area and all mods declared. However insurance as you know varies. Now with it being a Nissan it has its faults. The biggest and most documented is the dreaded 'VVT rattle'. Nissan developed the VVT for the 200SX and it is a great piece of kit however the sprocket and solenoid wears out quickly and you get a rattle. It usually happens on start up when warm only on for 1-2 seconds but you get some cars it sounds like a tractor and you have to keep the revs above 1k so you're not embarassed with it clanking away. It does not damage your engine as far as I have read. The bugger is it costs appx £600 to replace but it could rattle 500, 1000, 20k miles later it is pot luck. Rust is a biggy as well, I bought mine last March and it only had a 5p size piece of rust on the rear highlevel brake light. Now all the arches are bubbling worse than a teenage with hubba bubba. The gearbox's are not that strong and if you take them over stage 3a, like the auto supra you are living on borrowed time. But like the Auto Supra if you take care of it i.e. cooler and regular oil changes you will be fine. Handling is an absolute dream, and I am putting down claimed 300bhp and I have never had the back end step out once. The grip is excellent and it is not tale happy. They are very agile too and not lazy at cornering. The car feel planted. If you are considering one seriously then go and try and view one and get a feel for it. For your budget you should be a good one for that, but 2.5k woudl be a good budget to have to get a nicer one. The best advice I would say is try and get a stock one that has maybe only had wheels and an exhaust done to it. then Mod it yourself, I wish I had. Standard they do 60 in just a touch over 7seconds and have appx 140mph topend (book stats). Any other questions just as mate. Hope I have not bored you too much
benkei
Thanks for the good post! I am really tempted with one of these, but the only thing holding me back is my budget... DSK
I think the MR2 Turbo is the best option. + Strong performance + Known reliability + Great styling thats very eye catching provided the cars clean and polished + Always have a strong following

DSK
what about the 300zx, nice and quick rwd. they can be had for that money but do you not think £2K would only get him a battered twin turbo car?
