ShamelessTT
Hi all, Just quick request if anyones got time to check out my friends issue with his car, and might hazard a guess at what it is. http://s654.photobucket.com/albums/uu262/muld/?action=view¤t=Movie.flv The best sound of the issue is just before the end of the video. The sound comes from the passenger side, lower foot well. An issue has been suggested by two local garages (but they have only heard / driven it. If anyone comes up with it, it will confirm what they are saying. It happens, both in gear and out and sound changes with speed! (We have elliminated wheel bearings, anything catching and have a good look around underneath and cant see anything obvious.) Cheers, Simon

ShamelessTT
Well car drives absolutely fine, not problems getting in gear or any slip or antyhing like that. But possible........not quite what the garage came up with but related hehe!. (Guess the fault game!!)

ShamelessTT
Some one with very badly fitting dentures? He uses polygrip so no chance of that one.

They have suggested "Diff" failure is pending, so both garages have suggested fitting a new gear box , diff , and clutch. My question is why gear box, if its the diff? maybe its one unit? (Renault Clio Cup 172 Ph2) Expensive!!

AlanM
It is a strange noise for a diff? Is there any play in the drive shafts?
absz
i would say driveshaft or diff as a guess
ShamelessTT
It is a strange noise for a diff? Is there any play in the drive shafts? Now that we havent checked, would it be to simply to give the drive shaft a pull and push / up and down? and look for movement?
SUPRALOOPY
Open the diff and check the teeth on the crown wheel. cheap and eliminates the diff. Can you really feel it through the car or is it just a noise?

Can you really feel it through the car or is it just a noise? Its just a noise, car drives fine, pulls well and gears go in easily. Noise has been getting louder over the last week or so. (Used to be only when in gear, now its both).
SUPRALOOPY
What so it does it when stationary?
ShamelessTT
What so it does it when stationary? No sound, just a nice clean idle. (We also checked all exhaust piping incase it was blowing but its fine)
SUPRALOOPY
Ok so it makes the sound when under load? If you just start the car and sit there does it do it?
ShamelessTT
Nope no sound when just sitting there. Only if your rolling , either in or out of gear it makes the sound. Also you can hear it in the background when accelerating (if not to hard on the loud pedal to get the sound drowned out by engine)
SUPRALOOPY
Check the crown wheel of the diff, As this will make this sort of sound. BUT. Without actually driving the car I'm not going to commit. Although this was on a rear wheel drive car, so checking this will not be cheap as said earlier. Being french I'd say the gearbox/diff has shit itself. I would also pop a driveshaft out and check for roughness in movement first!
