ozz
I had my eyes tested last week and I'm confused by the results. As it appears to be quite popular to get medical advice on here and I know there are a number of opticians I thought I'd try before I go to the hassle of finding another optician. Basically, not been for over 5 years, went to a new optician and he did loads of tests as I get a lot of headaches. I've always had good eyesight, no issues. He said I had a mole on my retina. I said is that serious, he said if its bumpy I'll be rushed to hospital to have my eye removed. He then paused for effect it almost seemed. I prompted - is it bumpy?? He said he didn't think so. Next he says my eyes have dimples, I said is that normal he said if I was 40 he would be worried that its the first sign of glocomer (spelling?!). But I'm 33 so its okay. Anyway, turns out my left eye is -50 and my right is +50 with a slight stigmatism. I said do I need glasses and he said its up to me. Now as I was already confused about the other stuff he said I didn't push to much, I said I have no problem wearing them if I need them but he wouldn't commit to say that. So I said shall I leave it til the next appointment (2 years) and he said thats fine. So now I'm thinking shall I just wait or would I be better going to a different optician and getting glasses?? I use a computer probably 13 hours a day+ and read a lot. No problems reading but get headaches likely due to stress. Its a PITA to find another optician and get time of work, but it is my eyes... michael
I think I'd be inclined to check it was an opticians you went to and not the local buchers, maybe your eyesight is worse than you thought? It doesn't sound like the person you bumped into was very professional.... or an optician.

Someone else from work went there in the morning and had a similar experience. I'll feedback to HR I think. I'm just not sure if -50 and +50 is worth getting glasses for? ellis
Anyway, turns out my left eye is -50 and my right is +50 with a slight stigmatism. Do you run round in circles a lot? Eyes bleed? Are you sure it wasn't 5.0?
dani_r
-50 & +50? Surely that's -0.50 and +0.50. My eyes are -0.75 which means I'm slightly short sighted. I can function without glasses, but driving is a bit of a nightmare! Sign posts are not easily visible, which can cause obvious problems. If it's -5.0 and +5.0 then that means your totally blind and might as well have your eyes closed:d glasses are a must! It's amazing you've managed to get around if that's the case. I'm no professional but with having a + & - prescription you'd need glasses? That must confuse your eyes and could explain your headaches! When I had my eyes tested a few years ago they told me I had -0.75 and that it was my choice if I wanted glasses or not because it's not a strong prescription. Sounds like yours is 0.50 which is not strong at all. I opted to have contacts and now i can't live without them. My advice, go see another Optician, but at ALL costs avoid Specsavers, they have messed me around so many times, they're just cr*p (and that's the nicest word I'm prepared to use! ) Getting some contact lenses will almost definately help you day to day, just don't put the wrong one in the wrong eye! RED_ROCKET
i would get a second opinion m8 ive never heard of a mole on the eye but im not an expert, when i was younger i went to boots optician after what i thought was a very good examination he said i should get to my doctors as he had seen something which indicated ms at this point i shat myself and rushed of to docs who promptly set me at ease then wrote a letter to boots which resulted in this guy getting tha sack but i was still worried and saw a consultant who said that this optician was not qualified in anyway to make such a diagnosis he actually got very angry about
michael
Was it through the Eyecare vouchers scheme? I always find that they do a really crap half-arsed exam when you tell them it's one of those.
SimonT
Do you have your whole prescription that you could post on here at all just so I can see it as I work for a company called david clulow opticians and if I can't help you I know others that could but like it says above stay clear of spesavers as they are crap and use cheap materials for lenses etc! Quite right! Unfortunately I'm still using Specsavers because I use their Elite lenses which suit my eyes. Unless you can recommend a better alternative? AlanM
As someone who has had major eye problems in the past 12 years, (past being the operative word thankfully) I recommend you find a decent optician, saving pennies on your eyesight is like putting budget tyres on your Supra. This guy doesn't sound the slightest bit professional or knowledgable
AlexM
I'm trying to work out if this is a joke or serious. Go and see a real optician.
ozz
Hmm, thanks for the replies. I was thinking specsavers next, d'oh! Sorry, -0.50 and +.050. I'll dig out the pescription later. I just went to the local one, company paid for it. He was very thourough tho, just didn't communicate very well. A few people have said its a very low number so shouldn't be an issue. Will have to see what opticians are in Llanelli and get a second opinion I guess.
