I bought a car couple of days ago and it had just been MOT'ed 2-3 days before i collected it.

When i got home and was reading through the service history/reciepts i came across the mot and the advisory notes attached to it.

On the advisory it said that the steering rack had a bit of play, now i am no expert but would that not be classed as a MOT failure or is it still a pass if it is only minor play in the rack?

I would have thought that it would not pass an mot because off this and as i bought the car through ebay and it was advertised with a fresh mot i may be able to get the seller to pay for the replacement rack and maybe report the mot station to VOSA as well.

Thanks in advance.

The play would have to be excessive to fail...hence you only getting an advisory notice.

Good MOT stations now know that things like this go in the customers favor rather than against.

You can actually get the ministry of transport mot tester guide line book from the library if you want to check it out before going in all guns blazing.

Oh yeah i stopped mot testing about 5 years ago....thank god!

Hi, the advisory is there to tell you what problems you may have but that are not a fail at the time of test.most cars will have small bits of movement or play in different items, different models will be different as well. If you are really worried get a second opinion by a garage you trust,ie you cant fail brake pads unless they are below 1.5 mm, but a service would proberly tell you to change them before long before that.:)

You guys will know all about it when the MOT in England changes to how it is here in NI. We have dedicated DVLA/DVLNI run testing stations that have every test and full inspections. Ramps, headlight tests, suspension simulation tests, moving platforms on the ramps for the wheels to show up any excessive suspension movment etc etc etc etc.........

As far as I know it won't be too long before the whole of the UK goes this way.

In saying that I have just passed a 200sx and an accord within the last month with no probs and I thought both would fail this time round!!
