Thought I'd try a mystery object thread. Please post up pictures of things or bits of things, and we guess what they are. May get a page out of it, may die an immediate death.

I'm kicking off with something I own made in 1895, but are still in use today albeit of a more advanced design.

What is it ?

The first one is a compass of some description?

pair of compasses.

Mike

Nope, I'm afraid not. Used in a similar way though.

er, an small but old glass bowl?

Nope, it has a specific purpose...note the shape and the hole in the middle.

looks like a severely densly populated pomander ? Mike

Care to elaborate for the benefit of other avid readers ?

A modern form of pomander is made by studding an orange or other fruit with whole dried cloves and letting it cure dry, after which it may last indefinitely. The modern pomander serves the functions of perfuming and freshening the air and of keeping drawers of clothing and linens fresh, pleasant smelling, and moth-free.

The original form was used back from the 16th century by the gentry travelling the streets, held under the nose or in a handkerchief to obscure the smell of the open sewers that ran in the streets, thats remembered from a school history lesson,

shame i can't remember what happened two week ago:(

This is made of glass, circa 1780 to 1800. 4 inches in diameter, dished / bowl shaped.

What is is ?

Is it something a barber would use, like for bloodletting with leeches? The red and white is like the colours of the 'blood and bandages' red and white poles...

I'm stuck then. On a map can it be used to find your current position and coordinates? (Just throwing a guess in there!)

is the first one a protractor?

Map reading Dividers? For obtaining lengths on board ship?

Possibly some sort of Draughtsman equipment if not. Drawing scale related?

No so far, but getting closer. It is used by draughtsmen yes, and scale comes into it yes. Its used to measure something specific from a drawing or map.

:) I like your thinking, but no. Its use is far more mundane.

A clue...before gas and electricity.
