BMW M3 Vs Merc E55K AMG - Any Cons?

Maverick FAF

Recommended Posts

Currently looking to trade my second car 2004 Merc E320 CDI for something with a bit more power, but still 4 seats.

The current cars I am looking at are 2004 BMW M3 SMG Auto Vs 2004 Mercedes Benz E55K AMG.

Does anyone know any Cons / problems with these car with 60,000 miles plus. Also whats the highest mileage these cars should not be looked at twice.

Any valuable knowledge welcome.

Thank you

Regards

Mav

Also depends on budget i guess. I'm not sure if they offer it, but i'd assume they do. I'd look into the 07 335I 4 door. Its got a spify 3.0L Inline 6 twin turbo motor. I have a 2 door coupe and absolutely love it.

Here in the states, the 4 door 335i is ALMOST comparable in price to a nice E46 M3, the M3 still being a bit cheaper since its older but if its not far out of your budget, i'd look into it.

my mate has an 2003 m3 smg and i have to admit it impressed me, very quick, i personaly prefer the surge of a turbo motor but the m3 has a relentless pull all the way up to its 155 limiter and the smg box is awesome imo

Here is my 07 335I, it has intake/exhaust/chip and its dynoed over 360whp and almost 400ftlbs of trq. It makes that peak torque at just 2200rpms on the dyno. It literally can pull from any rpm in any gear.

the amg's are all auto's.

it wont matter as the BMW he is looking for is semi-auto anyway and the amgs autobox is pretty decent.

newer mercs have a few electrical gremlins - be sure to do the checks on that model.

I would go for the beemer - much more of a drivers car as has been said and a real machine - drive both and see for yourself

Which are we talking?

In recent years, BMW has said to have had more electrical issues then the Mercedes. My older brother owns a 08 BMW M5 - Within 2 months it was recalled to BMW due to faulty Alarm system. No worries that was rectified. Only for a month later there being an issue with the 'i drive' system. Not major issues, but hassle nonetheless. Not what is expected from a vehicle that costs well over 60k.

My mechanic also tells me he gets many more BMW's in with Engine issues over the Mercedes. Somthing like 4 to 1 being a BMW over a Merc.

So, i certainly wouldnt say the Mercs suffer with more electrical issues over the Bimmers. I have a very large family who love both BMW and Mercedes and i can safely say, the BM's have had far many more problems with them.

Its one of the reasons i went over from BMW to Mercedes. I used to love Bimmers like you wouldnt beileve.

The Mercs are that little bit special. Even the name alone conjures up more images of class and prestige, then BMW imo.

Either way, your fecked when it comes to customer service, as they are both shite.

The E class for a start!

Most newish mercedes have some kind of electrical issues and they are notorious for these problems

What should I look for?

Above all, look out for problems with the electrical systems, especially on early cars. Mercedes prides itself on being first with advanced electronic gizmos, but this car had problems.

Prod and push every switch to ensure they work. And, if the car has an automatic gearbox, make sure that it changes gear as it should, that the engine idles smoothly and there are no flat spots when accelerating.

On every model, also check that all the warning lights come on when you turn the igintion on, and then go out when the engine fires. Note also that the battery can go flat if a car is left for as little as three days (some owners fitted an upgraded battery to counter this), the electronics governing the brakes can go haywire, leaving the system in ‘limp-home’ mode, and the paintwork on older cars can scratch too easily or even flake off.

Overall, the car received a kicking from owners reporting to the JD Power customer satisfaction survey, while the What Car Reliability Index shows plenty of faults, too.

Yes they have had their gremlins (as have the 3 series), Mercedes has done much to rectify this for post 2006 models.

In all, 1000 pre-production versions of the new E-Class were tested for a total distance of nearly three million miles. This will now become the schedule for every new Mercedes.

From that very website...

Big Money Wasted? We think that's going a little far. The BMW is a great car -- if you like high-strung racing cars in street garb. Unfortunately, lots of everyday consumers buy these things thinking that because they're expensive, they must be reliable and trouble-free, which is about as far from the truth as Stuttgart is from Santa Monica.

As i said previously..

i certainly wouldnt say the Mercs suffer with more electrical issues over the Bimmers.

Still stands true.

Also judging by the latest JD power Surveys, Mercedes again ranks higher then BMW.

Still when it comes to the main heart of these vehicles - the engine, Mercedes walks it.
