Winter Sun?

Great idea, but we are looking at a 2 week holiday and I'm not sure there's enough to do there for 2 weeks?

I was actually going to suggest Oman, Dubai is a bit of a building site at the moment. You can go into the desert for a few days, see the turtles (once in a life time experience) etc.

Cyprus might be a suitable compromise, slightly cooler than the gulf but more established as a tourist area... although much of it will be closed for the winter.

Warm and sunny rather than hot but plenty to do and an ideal time to see the place without it being packed with drunken 18-30s types.

To me honest, I'm not sure about Oman. The thought scares me for some reason.

I've not been Cyprus before, but I wrote it off because I thought most of the place is shutdown in the off season. Any particular part you recommend?

Canary Islands are defiantly on the list. Been to most of the islands more than once. Cheap with good weather.

What about the Cayman Islands and Caribbean, has any one got any experience of these in January/February ?

Paphos is relatively open at that time of year, I spent Christmas there a few years ago and most things were open in the evening, all the shops and attractions were open as usual.

Some of the bars and restaurants shut down due to the decreased demand but there are enough of them to ensure you won't struggle for places to eat and drink at all times of the day.

I suspect most of the resorts will be the same, Paphos attracted an older crowd - lots of OAPs but if you want a quiet break with things to do it's worth considering.

The only other place I've been in winter like this is Tunisia, a long time ago but I remember it being a bit boring. Warm but boring unless you book yourself on lots of trips out and hire a car.

Mmm... might rethink Cyprus...

Winter in Paphos is very mild indeed. In fact many days one can sit comfortably in a t-shirt in the midday sun as temperatures can be up towards 20ºC. This is the period where Paphos gets most of its yearly rain. January is the wettest month on average with a standard of 9 days rainfall. The yearly rainfall in Paphos is just above 400mm on average and much of this falls in short, heavy downpours.

If you are in Paphos in winter and find yourself wanting a bit of proper winter weather you can find it in the nearby Troodos Mountains. In fact you’ll even find a ski resort here! Generally there is snow in the higher mountains (that reach up to 2000m) between January and March. So you can ski in the morning then swim and sunbathe at the beach in the afternoon! Weather in the mountains is very different to weather in Paphos itself and the other coastal regions.

Egypt is a great idea. I'm not sure about vaccinations during pregnancy though.

I went to Sharm El Sheikh it was a great place loads to do during the day and lots of trips you can take. We went to Cairo for a day to see the Pyramids Sphinx etc it was great. Well i didn't need any vaccinations when i went i think you need them if your going near the nile or something ;)

Some friends of mine went to Egypt earlier in the year, and both of them got a nasty tummy bug, even though they only ate at their resort.

Even though I'd love to see the pyramids etc, I don't know if I could stomach that, so to speak.

It may be just a one off though.

We went to sharm el shiekh too and stayed in the Hilton, and we too got a dodgy stomach for the first week. That said, it was a great holiday, nice and warm, great snorkelling etc :)

thats where i stayed i only got a dodgy stomach one nite you have to be careful of the food you eat and its advise not to eat their salads or fish...

I'm not sure the g/f will go for these temperatures:
