RedM
I'd say that DEP and Converge are a different type of brutal. Whilst Im not knocking it technically, the more mathy side of extreme metal has generally got the whole abrasive/calculator sound to it to make it more extreme. Making brutal music that is still based on simpler riffs (no tapping jazz runs and paradiddle drum beats lol) I think is slightly harder. I think how much you like the Converge side of things depends on how you came to extreme metal. I came to it from like Iron Maiden led to Megadeth, that led to Slayer, then to Morbid Angel, then Cannibal Corpse, then Hate Eternal. But if you've come to it from the hardcore side of things you're opinions will be different. And you'll have a silly cap and a spangly belt. Fact. Although you cant beat Panasonic Youth Plus personally, I think the deeper vocals are much more brutal. I agree with having a break from the vocals with clean singing but then it just starts getting a bit metalcore. And no-one wants to sound like As I Lay Dying. That said, it can be done, just takes some talent. Opeth kinda pull it off (when theyre not being boring as $#@!). Although with Whitechapel, All Shall Perish, Through the Eyes of the Dead, The Black Dahlia Murder etc you dont actually think "hmm these vocals are getting boring" as they're quite varied. And I see you're DEP and Burnt By The Sun and I'll raise you Guttural Secrete (wont post a link as theyre definitely a bit far into the splatter gore side of things lyrically - not that you can tell haha) You're like my new favourite club member. Yeah I got into some of this stuff from Straight Edge hardcore (thankfully I'm silly cap, bullet belt and tattoo free) and then got into early 90s 'proper' Emocore stuff. It's all just offshoots of the same thing. Were you ever into Coalesce? Awesome stuff. After reading this thread I dug out their split EP with BoySetsFire and rocked out while doing the dishes!! JamesF
Norma Scene! Never got into Coalesce, liked Boysetsfire though. Always reminds me of my mate telling me about this great new band called "Boys in the Well" (turned out to be Poison the Well). We should start a UK-Mkivs metal band lol. I havnt been to gig in ages. Think it was the last Unholy Alliance tour, and before that I think it wouldve been Zyklon. I acquired the new Unearth album the other night. Its ok, not sure how keen I am on it though. JamesF
Haha Manifold sounds good. Im totally out of touch with metal these days. I stopped buying the magazines cos when you get a magazine that covers everything from power metal to gothic eletronica to death metal and stoner rock, you generally cant trust the reviews as its so personal, especially when the reviewers have varied tastes. Myspace it is for me lol. Just spend hours trawling through Myspace pages. I liked the last BMTH song they did a video for and I hate them too lol
Bobbeh
I came to it from like Iron Maiden led to Megadeth, that led to Slayer, then to Morbid Angel, then Cannibal Corpse, then Hate Eternal. I had a similar route, but didnt start with Iron Maiden, couldnt stand the stereotypes that clung to that band and their fans, especially when you compare them to typical Slayer fans. I began with Metallica Ride the lightning and then Pantera. C-Corpse, Entombed, Carcass and Napalm Death were my fave 'heavy' bands Couldnt get into black metal at all. RedM
dude thats awesome!! how come you managed that! very jealous. Back in the day I used to just write to bands, ask when they were touring the UK etc etc. With the hardcore bands being so small and audience-friendly you'd always get a friendly reply and, when they played, the chance to chat before and after a gig. I used to follow certain bands on tour and once you've been to a few shows they get to know you and you get a sort of friendship going. I often used to get offered lifts to the next show which was always a blast. I'd make sure that I helped load the equipment in and out with them though, help with food, look after the merchandising table (that's another thing about h/c. Buying a record from a member of the band while they're drenched with sweat post-gig!) and the like. I also used to be able to afford to travel overseas to see bands too. I bet I've spent enough money on just seeing the band Fugazi to buy a low mileage Supra and then do a top notch single conversion on it. I know which will leave me with the happiest memories though. I'm oldish and boring now. Gigs are a special occasion these days. They used to be two, three, four or more times a week especially when I was back down south. But, hey ho, life goes on and most of my all time favourite bands don't tour anymore or have split up. Fugazi all have young kids these days, BSF split etc etc and as much as I like bands like DEP, Converge and the like, they don't have that h/c elements to them. They remain unapproachable, burdened by managers, record label shite and their own myspace hype. I'm happy with my memories, photos and vids of the 'old' days. Thorin
I'm nabbing that tonight. That looks good. Are you using it yet? How does it perform? I used version 0.3 or something like that, it showed promise but way too unstable. Looks like 1.0 is out shortly. I'm using Amarok at the moment, version 2 of that is out soon I believe. Update: Looks very good, installed a couple of addons, played around with it a bit... and it's now my music player of choice. Will have to see if Amarok 2.0 tempts me back when I finally get around to moving to KDE4.

Dude thats fantastic! thats some true Support to the Hardcore Scene i must say! nuff respect! and salute! sounds like it was a blast. i agree it does come hard to approach some bands. ABR were really nice, managed to talk ot the singer but the other gusy were packing up their gear i think tye are on tour hear but with very limited roadies so doing it themselves! If my band plays a show in your area- it be great if you could make it down to check us out and we can talk supras aswell

That's what I'm talking about. When a band like Fugazi, who can sell out three nights at 3-4000 attendance in one town, load their own gear in and out, deal with the cash both in and out and still find the time to talk, you have to wonder what some of these chancers are up to when they roll up to 'intimate' venues with a tour bus and roadies, don't talk to anyone and still can't hit the damn stage on time. If my band plays a show in your area- it be great if you could make it down to check us out and we can talk supras aswell It's a date.
