ADL Mark
Hi All, Wondered if anybody can tell me if it's required to have planning permission to install an air con unit on the outside of your house? Cheers, Mark.

ADL Mark
I was hoping the answer would be yes lol.. My kn0b of a neighbour has just had a unit put in this morning *right* next to my bedroom window, as close as he could to my house (semi-detatched). It's a fairly big unit, and I'm quite worried about the noise it will make and also hoping it won't cause interference to my Sky dish which it is almost touching. bolarbag
Why would anyone fit Aircon to a house in Britain?

JamieP
Why would anyone fit Aircon to a house in Britain? You can use it for hot air also;)
mathew
if its a fixed unit of a certain size then surely the party wall act would come into play if he has, as you said, put it as close as he could to your house.
mathew
we put in two (large) units on a roof of a morrisons superstore and they needed planning permission.

mr lover
Is it a listed building or conservation area ?
hoff
Its worth checking with the council. We have just put in an application for a pretty large local shop which required air con. We were told that no application was required for the air con for that (the original application didn't show it as it was in abeyance), however other concils have requested it in the past. If your neighbour didn't enquire himself he was a little stupid just incase its needed.
garethr
Doesn't feature on the Governments "planning portal" (although that probably means nothing) http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/hhg/houseguide.html
JamieP
Jamie, do you happen to know since you're into this building lark? What's the party wall act? I cant see the party wall act having anything to do with it, that only applies it you are working on the wall or extending it, you have to give the neighbout notice that you are gonna work on it and if they have a problem they have 14days to reply. ADL Mark
Can you reach it from your window? If so, shove a stick in the fan. I was having a good old inspection earlier and it is indeed a possibility I might check with the council, the property isn't listed or in a conservation area unfortunately. He did have the whole 30-odd foot of the rear of his property to mount it, but chose to do it as close as possible to my house. Had it been the other side of his house there's a footpath running next to it and it wouldn't have been a problem to anybody. Hopefully I'll find a way to p*ss on his bonfire one way or another... erol_h
if that unit makes noise at night you have every right to complain , what kind of d1ck installs a unit near a bedroom. When we install units outside we always ask is there a bedroom near as it can be heard.
ADL Mark
Well he turned it on for the first time last night, had it running until half past midnight. It's not loud but when it's quiet at night, all you can hear and feel through the house is this low humming making it impossible to get to sleep. Got a horrible chest infection at the moment so really could do with my sleep and don't think I'd make it round there to tell him what I think of him. Not sure what case I've got with noise pollution.. It's not massively noisy, but an annoying constant noise. Plus where's it attached to the wall you can feel the thing running as well.
