They were phonominal and had nothing to do with killing indie music. I think you will find that was Blur with there pop tunes ;)

ooooh, it's like it is 1995 again - great days. no, oasis killed it - stone dead, with their sales figures (much higher than everyone else for about 2 years) all the indie labels were bought up by the majors hoping to do likewise, but not knowing how it worked -> ie slow build up, regular tours on the uni scene etc -> they did not see instant success -> and scrapped the labels = result indie died.

now nearly every venue is run by a lager company and "there's only music, so that there's new ringtones."

POT I need a new Rank ;)

That's a tough one, I can't stand any of that 'indie' stuff, and Oasis winds me up even more!... Grrr... They only got recognised for having a funny accent, and acting hard... Liam would have got my respect if he'd actually gone and knocked Robbie Williams out...

Hmmm... I feel that putting anything to do with Oasis in your rank would only be insulting to a man of your quality :)

the real oasis were dull enough! (and killed indie music to boot) RIP.

Hehe. Independent music died long before Oasis (I think their first album was pretty good, btw) showed up. The major labels started pouncing on all the alternative music in the late 80's, and that's when it all went to cr*p. When "alternative" music isn't alternative any more, what do you do?!

Not saying that I didn't love some of the early 90's indie-pop that it spawned - much of my favourite music is from that scene, but the true "independents" eventually died a final death when Factory closed in 1992 (Tony Wilson RIP).

.....that said.......

I think there's some really good stuff cropping up in the last 2 or 3 years. The internet, and sites like myspace have really started helping some really experimental artists get their music distributed. It's worth spending some time having a scour about on t'interweb if you're looking for something new to listen to....
