I was thinking about buying a twin turbo mk3 supra.. are they fun to drive?

 

They are fun right up until the point where the head gasget goes.

 

As the gent above states it's better to go with a J-Spec one or one that has had the HG work done already.

Whats the power like on these beasts.. i have been told about 235 stock for the 3l turbo?

Are they single turbos or did they do a twin also.

 

you have the UK which is a 3.0 single turbo, around 250bhp

 

the JDM's are 2.0TT and 2.5TT and also 3.0, the 2.5TT is the 1JZ engine which is very similar to the 2JZ but it just has a shorter stroke,the internals still take a huge amount of power :) and is the ideal one, my 2.0TT made around 200bhp at lower than stock boost but can be upped to 250/260 on stock turbos fairly safely due to the twins having steel blades :)

 

for 2k you'll get a decent UK model and will probably have enough for a JDM 2.0TT, the 2.5's are usually over 3.5k

just to add that I think toyota went a little backwards when they made the mk4 having now owned a mk3, the mk3 has a much more involved drive and they handle suprisingly well! very easy to control on the limit!

 

they seem to be popping up quite a bit on pistonheads so i'm sure you'll find one on there soon!

I don't think I'd buy a 3-litre turbo (7M-GTE) unless I was prepared to spend a lot of time with a spanner or welding torch in my hand :)

 

There are exceptions of course, but http://www.forum.mkiiisupra.net is littered with posts about head gasket and bottom-end problems, and most of the 7M cars are rusty as they are UK-supplied rather than Japanese imports.

 

You might be lucky, and find a JZA70 (2.5 1JZ-GTE TT) for 2K, but most owners know what they have.

 

Again, personal opinion, but I wouldn't buy an auto GA70 (2.0 1G-GTE TT) unless I could convert it to manual (W58 box from a non-turbo 7m and a 1G bellhousing).

UK cars are 3.0 or 3.0 Turbo, 7M-GE or 7M-GTE, both suffer from head gasket problems and both come in an awful auto or 5-speed manual.

 

JDM's also come in 2.0 Twin Turbo or 2.5 Twin Turbo 1JZ-GTE. The 2.0 TT had a digital dash.

 

I've had a non-turbo and turbo and they're big bouncy barges and are nowhere near as nice to drive as my UK mk4 :blink: Comfy cruisers, well behaved on the limit but not a car to chuck around really, they feel their bulk.

 

They rust like mad around the rear arches and sills too, very rare to find one without any rust these days :(

The 2.0 TT had a digital dash.

 

 

mines got a non digi dash :)

 

there is type R 2.5tt which is a lightned verison from factory, has recaro seats and a few other bits as standard, most of the 1jz ones in the country are tt r's

I love my mkiii (uk version), even though I have just had to do the head gasket! (pretty easy to do as it goes) As said above the Jap specs are the best with regards to being less prone to rust and having no head gasket probs and better engine options.

 

Oh and there is also a rare 2.0ltr non turbo.

do you think the the fact that the blow so many HG's is because they ahve not been done properly? ie not checked for visible signs of a cracked/warped head or not skimmed properly?

The theory is that the head bolts were never tightened enough, most people recommend tightening them harder than factory specs.

 

I don't think it helps that now as they're getting older they've not been so well serviced and a lot of people haven't used the correct coolant causing overheating and corrosion of the head. This was certainly the case of my non-turbo, the head was in an awful state and ended up being welded quite extensively to save it.

 

The head gasket is a lot easier to do in the non-turbo, the turbo is a bit more hard work with tricky bolts and bits to get to!

 

There's also some narrow body ones, JDM only though. I *think* they were only the 2.0 but I'm not sure?
