Fairford air show 2008

Is anyone else going this year? Went a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it, the Russian MIG with thrust vectoring was something else, never seen a plane fly like that, it's unreal! Eurofighter wasn't bad either.

I think the new US jet is there this year which should be interesting.

And no fairford is not the answer :)

Fairfo... oh.

RAF Fairford in South Gloucestershire (or Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, I forget). Just north of Swindon. Fab day out and SOOO much to look at you can never see everything. You would absolutely love it. It's not just aricraft stuff, they have cars, stunt shows, and lots of military folks from around the world that are always interesting to talk to.

As I work for a major well known UK defence contractor, ;) I can get special tickets for the VIP enclosure for less than the usual entry fee which includes a sit down area, guidebook and food. Not sure on the allocation, but I'll have a look

Bugger: Just looked and I'm too late. Must have missed the original offer email and forgot all about it :( Sorry guys, but it seems I posted erroneously...

Doesn't matter, I don't begrudge paying the entry fee anyway, it is a proper day's entertainment :)

Not to worry mate last year I think entry tickets were £30 each & same again for grandstand view.

They down layout well too could'nt see anything land or take off in the grounds unless you had grand stand tickets crafty layout but works

There's some good spots if you know where to go. There's a free area right in the middle of the runway on the south side where you can get right to the front. You can see both ends of the runway with ease and it's the centre point for all of the displays.

It's one area they cannot fill with trade/closed stands as it's the centre point access for the runway, will probably be in touch if you're there on Sat anyway :)

I'm there on Saturday, staying in a hotel saturday night, then driving to Goodwood festival of speed on Sunday, i've been to Fairford before think it's great. I really liked seeing this there.

Nice weekend then :D

Spotted that last year, but don't recall seeing it fly. Incredible bit of machinery and got a chance to look at it up close thanks to a friendly US Navy chap

Is there still a good mix of old and new machinery there?

IMO nothing beats the sound that the BBMF makes when it performs.

Yeah, there's a lot of older planes there. They had a supermarine spitfire, a lancaster, hurrcane and plenty of other WW2/post war planes doing displays. Although no where near as spectacular as the latest tech, they sound incredible and look majestic in the air.

There were even some bi/tri wing post WW1 stuff doing some displays

Yup can't wait think it was 2006 when i went, it did fly then great bit of kit i'd love to see the SR71 fly but they've been mothballed i think, love the MiGs etc too.

You'e definately right, the newer stuff is spectacular to watch. In a way it's a shame they don't push the older stuff a bit more, but I guess they are 50+ year old airframes and alot cannot be replaced. I'm going to the trade day at Farnborouh next month, and really looking forward to seeing some of the cutting edge stuff and what it can do.

Like you said before Homer, the Russian stuff with the thrust vectoring is awesome to watch. They almost come to a halt they can move so slowly.

I was lucky enough to see the SR71 fly there about 15 years ago. "Wow" doesn't quite cover it. It did a high speed, very low pass before flying back to the US, thats something I'll never forget :D

Something like 3.5hrs to LA with an in flight refuelling, some bit of kit, when the new scramjets become more feasable that will be tame however.
