CJ
In a month or two I may be in the market for a people carrier but my knowledge of these things is pretty much non existant. I am looking for ideas as to what makes and models to search for but will be governed by a very tight (read small) budget. I think I would want something to take at least 5 people in comfort (I know ordinary cars will do this but I want lots of room), be petrol driven and be no more than 2500 pounds. Any advice on models for me to look for would be appreciated.
Scott
Vauxhaul Zafira. Surprisingly good car IMO. Can get these silly cheap. The Ford Galaxy is another highly rated cheap people carrier.
SupraAyf
CJ, we hired a Ford S-Max for 1 month and it was nothing short of brilliant - good fuel economy, good looks and very practicle for transporting 5-6 in comfort (or 4 in our case with a shed load of luggage and equipment). Likely to struggle for £2500! Galaxy or Zafira, test an Espace (they are awful but huge!) and a Scenic. The VW Sharans are nice, but unlikely to be so cheap

AndyT
Seat Alhambra (read VW Sharan but cheaper) and Peugeot 807. Cheap as chips and go forever. My mate's on 200k in his. Plenty of parts available too.
Aero-M
citreon xsara picasso, had mine a year and it has been no trouble, 5 full size seats and a huge boot. early 00-02 models are well in your budget, 4* safety to, not many in this price range as good imo. robin
I am surprised no one has mentioned the toyota estima. Not too many petrols about mind but you should find many well under £2500.

A good point Robin - you can pick up a nice one at the Southampton Jap Auctions for around the 1500 mark. Good thinking;)

juanchan
My parents owned a Scenic for 6 years, and my work used to run Xsara Picassos as company cars. Both are ok at what they do, but IMO, I wouldn't say they transport 5 adults in complete comfort. An ex had use of her parents Voyager and that absolutely massive inside.
