marc_p
You have a barrel of oil, and you need to measure out just one gallon. How do you do this if you only have a three-gallon container and a five-gallon container? Fill up the 5 gallon container then empty into the three gallon container, then empty the three gallon container into the barrall, you then have 2 gallons in the five gallon container so empty the two gallons into the three gallon container, you then fill up the five gallon container and pour into the three gallon container leaving four gallons in the five gallon you then empty the three gallon container and pour three gallons into the three gallon container and you are left with one gallon in the five gallon container. Phew....
scooby_doo_do
There's a much easier way.... Fill up the 3 gallon, and pour into the 5 gallon, re-fill the 3 gallon and fill up the remainder of the 5 gallon - thus leaving you 1 gallon...

TonyP
Two strangers from different parts of America both build simular apartment buildings in their home towns. By chance, they both forget an important part of thier project. They each, once again by chance, call the same national hardware store and order the missing items. The prices they are quoted are as follows: one will cost them $2. two will cost them $2. twelve will cost them $4. and a hundred and fourty-four will cost $6. What was the item they needed? tbourner
A fool wants to tie a rope around the earth. So he buys a rope of 40,000 KM and ties it around the world. His neighbour, also a fool, wants to do the same only he wants the rope on sticks 1 meter above the ground. How much more rope does he need? And how much more rope do you need when you use a tennis ball instead of the earth?
lexsum
6.28m as for the ball - need no more you would have enough for a few balls.
tbourner
6.28m as for the ball - need no more you would have enough for a few balls. Yep. It's 6.28m for the tennis ball as well, although a tennis ball with 1m long sticks coming out of it and rope attached would look a bit odd!! Scott
Took me a while too. Its a bit of a cheat as its nothing really to do with maths. I had a piece of paper and everything out trying to solve it. Think of the numbers as a description of the number.
