c7hru
:I am refurbing my headlights and am going to spray the insides black. Do i need to use a primer or base coat or can i just go straight for the black? Thanks!
supraturbochris
when i did mine, i went straight on with the black. The paint took to the headlight covers lovely.
c7hru
Thanks mate, how long ago did you do them?
JNk10
may i ask, are you putting glass fronts on instead of the plastic ones ? If so, do you need any bonding stuff ? Just ordered some of the glass ones from someone on here
c7hru
No just polishing away at my plastic ones and putting those back on. sorry!
JNk10
no worries - im interested anyway as i want to do mine black too
Stevo
Remains to be seen how long 'going straight to black' would last over time - paint may crack. For how long it takes and the little extra expense, my advice would be to use a plastic primer to be on the safe side.
c7hru
Good point, think i will use the primer. Will get up extra specially early to go and get some
Stevo
Probably best plan mate. Given how much any part on any car is subject to shock & vibration from normal driving, the primer will help with a better bond. Just think how gutted you'd be if you had to take them apart in a few months or so to re-do them...
c7hru
Yeah! I would be ever so slightly annoyed this might sound silly, i was going to use spray paint do you think that is best option or a matt paint?
Pabs
I've done my UK glass headlights recently - look fantastic on the car! I hope they don't leak though, but I did reseal them and then add some extra sealant as well. I used the UHT spray paint from halfords - as others have also done - as the matt finish looks really quite nice, and it should be able to handle the heat from bulbs, engine etc.

saucyhot
I recently did mine too... i used a plastic primer first, and then a high temp matt black paint. i dont know if u need to use high temp paint, put after it took me ages to get the lights apart.. so i thought i might aswell do it right the first time... good luck... check out my garage for pics
