At work, if I need to log an IT problem, I have to ring a certain extension number that puts me through to an IT helpdesk in INDIA, who take all the details of the problem. They then get back to our CHELTENHAM offices with the problem, who forward it onto the IT people here in Southampton. It's a complete ballache, and unless one of the IT guys here emails you (so you can hit "reply"), we have no way of contacting them internally to officially log any issues.

Im biased, I work in IT. But I do believe my company is different. We dont repair desktops, we replace, then fix and recycle. We spend a lot of time making sure our systems are up and stable....

I do take some pride in my work ;)

Tell me about it our's based in Holland same procedure and our dept is the heart of a business supporting 5500 or so outlets and thousands of customers shocking pc's are about 8 years old

We're not so customer orientated in that sense, but we recently had our machines "upgraded". My computer at work now takes about 6 minutes from powering on to being able to do anything on it! You can argue that that is good tea brewing time, but that's not really the point!

The individuals involved I have no issues with onsite, but the overall company ethos is ridiculous, especially when the folk at the Indian call centre don't know what we're on about.

Ours is poor too, but I work in it and it's not our fault . I spend over half of every month doing things that are not at all IT related, meaning everything I plan on doing (which needs to be done) suffers. It is VERY frustrating.

I'm part of the department so I guess I might be biased but over the past 8 months things have gone from being pretty good for the users to being utter crap IMO, I really pity them now but can't do anything about it but laugh from a distance, glad that I don't do support ;)

Previously if they had an issue they called the local customer helpdesk which was next to the outsourced (but in-house) 2nd line chaps in the same local office where 80% of the users are, the problem was fixed within the hour in most cases and everyone was happy.

Then the company we worked for lost the contract despite the service being ace, it was a cost thing and the big guys won on price. I was then transferred to them via an agency as part of the contract along with 50% of my colleagues, the others left for jobs with the old company, I got chance at one but turned it down due to my circumstances at the time... kicking self now :)

Anyway... the remaining folks were then separated into different teams and handed off to various managers who they have never met, some of them were put into the wrong teams and frankly suck at the job they are expected to do. Hardware engineers instantly became software support chaps and it's not working.

At the same time the helpdesk was closed and moved to Belfast but all the staff there are from overseas, Denmark, Spain, Italy and more... none have English as a first language, none have IT skills.

So users now call someone who can't help or understand them who then passes on the fault badly to someone who wouldn't be able to help even if they didn't.

Amusingly the savings the client made on the initial contract have now been lost as all the stuff we used to do for free is being added on top of the basic stuff at cost so service has gone downhill and costs up... more to come too, the next step is to move all the servers / data overseas which should open up a whole new world of amusement.

*note to self: look for a new job soon*

Working in IT as well, I'd like to be biased in my favour - but unfortunately I'm not.

The IT department is sh*te. Organisational structure is a maze - nobody knows who reports to who - helpdesk employee's don't know a THING about IT and so the 2nd/3rd line IT teams (where I work) get given all the sh*t, and only know about it when it's too late and the users/execs have been waiting for it for months.

We are never recognised, nobody thinks we are doing anything to improve the systems but we spend sooo long keeping the legacy naff ones working (eg. Dell PC's and servers that are over 10yrs old) we don't have the time to upgrade and move on.

I'm leaving as soon as I can - CV's out there and interviews imminent :)

Strange I am trying to convince my company to do this. It would result in me moving with the servers...... :D Austria was a our 1st choice, but might need to change that considering some recent events.

South Africa seems to be one of the main options being considered but one of the main issues "we" have at present is a pretty dire network and frequent WAN issues caused by BT screwing up, I can't see it working too well. I'm just going to kidnap my server and hide it under my desk I think :)

Just to give you an idea of what my IT Dept was like when I ran it - I changed the IT helpline extension number to 666. :) ;)

When I quit they apparently brought in some Indian import to run things. He then gave the database contract to a company in India and threw 4 years of working relationship with the original company out of the window.

Last I heard he'd got the boot - along with the director who'd brought him in. :D

What, work? :p

You evil man.

Honest response, if I'm working on something IT related I get stuck in and tend to enjoy it at the same time. Trouble is, I seem to do most of the invoicing for the company and it's very laborious and I hate it - so I try and put it off. Staring at excel spreadsheets for hours on end is not my idea of fun ;).

I used to work for EDS I used to be on a team called Quantum, we used to look after HMPS prision service network and pc along with user admin.. must say they hadnt a clue on how to run the join, they got rid of 3/4 of the staff then complain that we are not meeting targes which were costing the company £60,000 a week but to be honest i miss that joint i hated working there but mint crack and the people were a laugh.

I now work for siemens and we look after the BBC however i am on the finance team.. I was meant to be second line, but due to needing staff i got put on this new project, Was told sap training was involved so i was like yes please! any way been there since august still had no training, I deal with any where from a problem that could cost some one there pay to a order going wrong as big as 3 million.. Its the most boring job ever and whats worse is my team are idiots bar a few people, my TL is one of these guys who does every thing by the book and the system is crap! still waiting a 40mb wan upgrade been 3 months now!! Oh here's how stupid he is, we got new tvs fitted but we dont have a aierial so we stream it, any way when the TV's are on the systems are so slow we cant work, we turn them off every thing picks up, We have said look we dont care about tv we want every thing to run ok and the tv's are taking up bandwith, he tells us we need to have a team down in bristol monitor and have a case raised.. whats worse is we have even proven its the tv's yet he wont believe us!??!?!

Our It Manager is sooo dump he doesnt even know a thing about it he came over and asked if laptops can have wireless?

Any way for the last week I have been supporting Vosa and helping out on MOT systems which is fun :D I actually found out a supra can weigh the same as a transit van!
