Is there anybody on here who would kindly spend 5 minutes explaining to a numpty just which settings and records I need to change to swap a couple of domains over to a new host.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of what does which and what, but I'm scared I'll bugger the whole thing up if I change the wrong settings

Can e-mail or PM with more detail, many thanks!! ;)

I'll get work to get one in, but it's really just a simple question about changing over DNS servers. I'll try and explain.

I have domain.co.uk hosted by and administered by PlusNet. I've just signed up for 3ix web hosting (cheap as chips and seems pretty good).

I've read up on the PlusNet, 1&1 and 3ix FAQ's and knowledgebases about domains, nameservers and records and somehow got a little confused. All I want is the domain.co.uk (and there's also a domain2.co.uk but same principal) to point to the 3ix webspace.

3ix say that I need to just change the DNS servers on the domain to point to theirs and everything will start working hunkey dorey in 24-48 hours. However, PlusNet tell me I need to change A and MX records to have the domain work properly. I can on the PlusNet control panel change the DNS records, just that this isn't what they said to do. Problem is talking to PlusNet technical support is close to banging your head against a wall with a spike sticking out of it and there being a nation paracetamol shortage

So question is, if I go in to the PlusNet control panel, change the two DNS servers to point to 3ix's, will my webspace and mail magically start going to the 3ix servers within 24-48 hours.

I think is what confuses me is that I can see how changing the A and MX records will affect things as these tell the 'Internet' what IP to associate the domain name with and sends requests there. But I don't see how leaving these be and just changing the DNS servers makes any difference..

Hmmm, just checked again and PlusNet don't allow you to change the DNS Nameservers through their control panel, only make changes to the A, C-NAME and MX records. I take it this is a pain and just proves what I thought, that PlusNet are a nunch of bobs?
