I need to download the above to convert .avi files to enable me to burn to DVD and watch them on a normal DVD player.

Is there a free version of the above or are they all pay for software?

You'll find that you actually lose some quality when down converting from avi tho' CJ.

At least, all the progs I've tried did so. :(

The problem is that my friend only has a small PC screen and doesn't have a DVD player that can play .avi files so he needs them converted. I have a nice big monitor and so can play all mine through the PC and maintain the quality.

As an aside, if I covert several films can I then burn 3 or 4 DVD files to a DVD disc so that he can choose which he watches on a DVD player?

Nope, it doesn't work that way I'm afraid.

When you convert a film to DVD it compiles it into all the files that would make up that DVD. (Take a look at one on a PC and you'll see what I mean.)

There are progs around that you can use to compile a few films into one DVD though. Unfortunately I can't recommend any as I don't convert them anymore.

You can yes, but not as easily as you think.

its a bit of a pain, easier just to make them seperate.

I think that's the way to go. He pays for the disks so it's no biggy. :)

Just testing DVD Flick now, allows you to put multi part AVI's on same disk and plays one after other.

Does it allow you to create a menu to select what movie you want to watch or are you stuck to ffwding?

Sorted. :)

Mmm...actually, no. :(

I burned 2 DVD's today using Nero but as .avi files and mp3 files as one was all music and one contained 6 films. So, up I go to my mates house and we try the films in his DVD player and it doesn't want to know.

So then, we try it on his brand new laptop but it still doesnt want to know. It can see the .avi files but will not play them through windows media player.

I brought the disk back home with me and it plays fine in both VLC and Windows media. Could this be due to Vista? Or maybe he needs a Codec pack?

It also may be due to me having installed and running DivX and him not having this on his PC eh? hence the missing codecs?

Although once again I've been ignored.. :) DVD Flick worked really well...

I wasn't ignoring you. I just could not find DVD Flick on the site you linked to.

Edit to add: Well, me being a numpty, I didn't see the search function! I have now downloaded it and will give it a whirl.

Good mention CJ. I bought this ages back and have been using a 'trial' version for a while before that. All I get is constant problems with WinAvi. It always seems to close down due to an unexpected error and even though I have installed Quicktime Alternative, it still says the QT Codec 6.5+ isn't installed on my system. Any ideas?

It's a great program when it works which is once in a blue moon.

Cheers :)

I have just found and started using a program called DSO ConvertXtoDVD and it has been very good so far.

I can use it to convert AVI files to DVD format and it also burns 2 to a disk and allows me to create menus as well.
