bromy
I thought it was bad to over excercise large breed dogs when they are young as this can lead to hip/joint problems in later life - is this correct?
Steviekid
I thought it was bad to over excercise large breed dogs when they are young as this can lead to hip/joint problems in later life - is this correct? Yes. Although I'd change the word large to giant, e.g. newfoundlands, great danes etc.
Thorin
Is that not what I just said?? I was just clarifying it. Wouldn't want people thinking it's uncommon for young dogs to get hip dysplasia.

Actually, by it's very definition (abnormal growth) hip dysplasia only affects young dogs, it's just that it doesn't usually show up until later on. The only reason that it's usually diagnosed at an early age is that that's when people usually get their dogs routinely hip scored for breeding. Arthitis in old dogs isn't necessarily due to hip dysplasia as a pup. There can be severe oseophytic changes in the hip joint without any subluxation of the femoral head from the acetabular fossa at all.
Shadow Beast
hi mate, just read through your thread, very sorry to hear about your dog. My choclate lab has hip displacia and had it diagnosed at 6 months old, he went to cambridge where the vets told us that it was the worst they have ever seen, he is 6 now, runs for 40 mins every night, best thing we have ever given him was green lipped muscles by company called muscletone, you can get them from most health shops, best thing we ever give him. richie
Chris Wilson
How did you get on? I have found this sequence of gait analyses and videos good in showing dogs that have normal gait, dysplastic gait, and cruciate ligament problems gait. http://accad.osu.edu/~hcaprett/COTA_741_sp04/CanineLO_090504.html
