Air con compressor not kicking in on my merc
Stevie Boy replied to Benzsupra's topic in Non-Supra Technical
I assume the print out confirms the correct data for quantity for that model. As A/C system has pressure switch will not run system if over/under pressurized. Would be worth checking a couple of simple things like any related fuses for the A/C heater controls etc not blown and the electrical connection on the compressor for the clutch is connected and if feed is present with A/C on. Also may be worth following A/C lines around and see if you can find pressure swich make sure that's connected. Could be a fault registered with the A/C control itself where i guess it may be quicker to get some fault codes exracted to see whats going on, especially if the compressers not cutting in at all. -

Who re-gased it for you? Do you know if they put the correct amount in? -

I'm far from rubbishing the idea, as they're not the only manufacturer to use CC systems either. For example on Jag XJ&XK 4.0/4.2 V8 supercharged engines, Jag used CC to cool the compressed air, but say on a Mini Cooper S they went for air to air with ducting in bonnet, surely reinforces the fact that car/engine manufacturers use what they deem an efficient and i'd expect most cost effective method of doing the job, but surely not the be all and end all method.
-
Thats another thing i tried to comprehend, all the aftermarket CC set ups i've seen have been far from unintrusive of "bling", OK so Laminova style heat exchanger may be kept discrete for fluid/oil to water cooling, but air to water cores tend to be pretty large (all be it not as "huge" as air to air).
-
Some good points raised there, some might also have said, If having a CC would have a benificial effect "TOYOTA would have used one", but may not be considering engine builders surely have to keep to budgets, reduce the number and expense of components to minimum needed to do the job sufficiently and also for reliability, but not necessarily without scope for improvement.

Got bit sidetracked halfway through my post, meanwhile looks like you confirmed my suspicions of the sleeve stopping the hose from over expanding (and therefore damaging the internal reinforcing fretting). I'm suprised you feel hardpipes are 99% bling over rubber, but you do have the race car experience so who am i to argue. Would the rubber hoses really have to expand to such a great extent to feel a noticeable difference in part throttle boost response? After all i'm not posing a scinario were "no boost" is being produced due to the hoses swelling up large enough to absorb the displacement of the 3lt engine, just the minor difference that may be experienced in response in comparison to no/minimal expansion.
-
I haven't seen the sleeve and hose for quite a while now as been a few years since i removed it, but IIRC it only covered the main centre section and wasn't a tight fit around it, i do recall when revving the engine while examining the hose you could see it expand untill it reached the restriction on the thick sleeve. As there are no sleeves on the other main boost hoses i wonder how these behave under pressure as never paid much attention as i was just curious as to the purpose of that sleeve. I'm still running a stock front on mine, with a small solid lip spoiler replacing the stock rubber job, the coolers i put in the empty side apartures are ducted but i'm yet to duct the FMIC (except for the carbon slam panel trim), i plan on doing the whole lot together as the makeshift resin ducts id knocked up for the coolers look a bit unslightly and one has begun to open up around the bottom edge of the transmission cooler so no doubt some air will be taking the easier route through the gap.
-
I wouldn't wanna argue which is best SMIC of FMIC, as the FMIC from a cooling and pressure drop efficiency introduces many con's which arn't present with the stock SMIC. One improvement i did expect and feel i did encounter replacing the entire stock set up with the Blitz LM V-Spec was the fact that all the stock rubber boost hoses are replaced with hard pipes. I know hard pipes are available for stock SMIC set up, but i am comparing difference I experienced with replacing stock SMIC set up with an aftermarket FMIC package. Which came complete with step up's etc into large bore hard pipework with very short run silicone hoses (where the hard pipes literaly meet each other anyway). Anyway i feel perhaps where Toyota original used long run (reinforced) rubber hoses, these would expand when boost pressure rises, as it appears on the 1st main top boost hose Toyota added a sleeve which i assume is to stop the hose over expanding? Well on fitting my FMIC i feel there was a noticable difference in boost pressure response where perhaps previously initially pressure increase spent on expanding these hoses, so i wonder whether improvements people seem to experience on switching to FMIC is not only down to replacement of nackered "10year old" SMIC, but also the replacement of stock hoses with the "hard" pipe work. Just my thoughts........

Haven't seen that film in years! Was the whole facarde with Instructor Kelly McGillis a coverup then? Swordfight! I do remeber finding the ending a bit too soppy/cheesy. Wasn't one of them called Jester?

Club Stand at Time attack @ Brands Hatch - 2nd September
Stevie Boy replied to DamanC's topic in England - South East
What sorta lap time did Daz manage with the 1.8bar + Jungle Juice/Moonshine remap changes? Can't believe that, thought you guy's had packed up and left after all the pissin about with Red Flags and waiting around in previous round. Any vids? That's summink i'd like to see/hear, the Rex flying down that straight on full chat at 1.8 bar! Any more local events left this year? -

Did Daz come back or was that what we saw before the Pick-up truck final? -
Anyway hopefully you don't get anything through the post. I'm sure most of us have made the mistake of exceeding the speed limit, it's just unfortunate you may have got caught.
-
I'm sure anyone could rack-up a few points in a 1litre Fiesta too, if they wanted to! You could still break the speed limits in buit-up areas in one!

Agreed, an enjoyable day out. Nice that Brands is quite local so no long drive on the way back. Was good getting into the Pits to check out Steve's Supra, say hi to Paul and Darren and see how they were getting on with the RX. Well done to the guy's, they did well. Darren put some impressive lap times down in the RX, shame the action kept getting stopped with the occational "off's" that were happing (damn those Fensport guy's) . I reckon Steve will be one to watch when he sheds some weight and the A/C off his Supra. Suprisingly the "pick-up truck" racing was quite entertaining to watch, had great difficulty dragging myself away when they started the final round of it later on. Good stuff! -

Hows your battery/alarm issues coming along? Will there still be a club stand without you there? -
Yup Happy Birthday fella, on a Friday too so no doubt you'll be tonight! Hope the cars going well too!

I guess this would depend on if the surface area of the cone filter was greater than a stock panel filter area, otherwise I'd be suprised if it would flow anymore air than a stock.

Three types! I bought my 1st house 10months ago, managed to keep my Supra and it owes me nothing! Only problem i now have is any spare cash for luxuries I get goes on home improvements and getting wasted so i can take advantage of coming in a stupid o'clock, missing the toilet bowl of the new bathroom suite i put in! (not as much fun when i know how much grief it was laying the new floor tiles!) I'm hoping the home improvement spending will subside after a while, last couple of big buys yet to be done is a new dining table suite (a lot more expensive than i thought for a decent one) and eventually get a new kitchen fitted . So in the meanwhile it's pretty hard finding cash to blow on the Supra for anything other than tax, insurance and general maintanence as i now also have a 2nd car to runabout in which is cool so the Supe gets to rest most of the year! Bit of a tough call Dave cos if you sell up and get on the ladder it will probly be a while before you get yourself another. Then again I coudn't go back to that "Mad House" of my parents and it's great now cos I don't mind being there just visiting my mum, dad, my older bro, his fiance and there little kid (my niece) cos i know i can go home, kick back and relax in my own pad afterwards. Whereas living there I think I was slowly going insane (niece has now hit the Terrible 2's ). I do count myself lucky to still have my Supra, and getting on the ladder (on my own back as didn't wanna lose out if anything happened with the gf later on ), but at the same time it's horrible not being able to spend much of what i earn on it!

Would't seized sliders have to be on sliding calipers as featured on J-Spec brakes Chris? Thought you had spec UK brakes for some reason Dave and therefore the 2pot/piston rears. Guess this would have to mean siezed pistons on those? I was trying to save Dave having the unecessary work of having a wheel bearing replaced (diagnosed by TDI) to rectify an intermittant scraping noise and thought checking to see if he'd hit the pad wear warning scraper was a good cost free idea. I guess replacing the pads would also remedy this, if that was the cause of the scraping noise so no point beating around the bush eh, just slap a new set in! I've had a set of Chris's Fast Road pads on my rear UK's in the past and at £50+£4.50 P&P's that's a really good price.
