Hi Scooter So I swapped them back over and with your ECU it was all fine this time, I took extra care this time to make sure both plugs were tight and even blew onto the terminals and just did 15 miles stopping and starting with no problems at all other than having no 4th gear as you say. I'm well chuffed this means its defo the ECU yes? First gear is as sweet as before with yours, having no 4th gear makes for a revvy straight at 50 but point proven I think! Thanks so much for letting me borrow it, I will return it shortly if you give me your address on a PM Brian I have sent you a PM but not sure if they dont work too well at the moment? None of mine seem to ever appear in the sent items so not sure if you got it? I would love to pay shipping to get yours if thats still agreeable?

Ok let me swap them again today and really check as to be honest the symptoms do seem to look like a loose connection I just didnt want to damage the ECU or car any more so swapped back to mine but I'm happy to have another go as the carpet etc is still all up, if its still faulty and has been damaged in transit in some way how about you keep the deposit and I send it back to you at my expense as obviously it's not your fault in any way? I'll let you know what happens anyway - but to me common sense dictates the ECU is seemingly the problem with the gears yes?

Ok just been swapping the ECUs and want to report back. Put Scooters in and set off, first gear problem totally disappeared then got to about 35 going slowly and it started hesitating, then after about a mile it started what I can only describe as acting like it was struggling to get fuel, jerking etc, then it cut out completely. I tried to restart it but it just ran for a second and cut out, then I totally turned it off and re-started the car which I assume acts like a reset to the ECU and it started, but whenever it went into gear it either cut out or drove for about 20 yards then cut out. So I switched back to my ECU and the first gear fault came back immediately and constantly but the car worked exactly as before after a minute of slight misfiring which I assume came form the over fuelling after all the breakdowns. Now its totally back to normal from the get go apart from first gear. So to me this proves my fault is definitely the ECU, would we all agree? So with that in mind Brian_C1 if you are still happy to donate yours with manual not working and everything else fine I would love that, I will as agreed pay all shipping etc expenses and I will PM you in a minute. The other thing is your ECU Scooter has more problems than fourth gear missing I'm afraid, but maybe only in my car. I havent done anything whatsoever to it, not opened it and I know nothing about them so I hope you dont feel I have done anything to it, literally all I have done is plug it into my car and unplug it. It does have a slightly different part number to mine so I am wondering if its fine for you but sends the wrong signals for fuelling or sparking or whatever to mine? Probably nothing but yours has part number 175700-5990 and mine has number 175700-4821. Maybe there's just one loose pin or connection? Anyway let me know what everyone thinks

Hi Scooter - yes its arrived, I'll get the Supra's carpet up at the weekend and do the old switcheroo then see what happens, thanks so much for letting me borrow it. fingers crossed it is the problem as it just doesnt feel like the gearbox, other than first gear it drives just like it always has. I'll let you all know.
-
That would be fantastic and of course I would fully cover all of your costs in advance Brian. I'll let you know if Scooter's indicates it is the problem and we can go from there and thanks again!
-
Again to use what is fast becoming a catchphrase 'excuse my ignorance' but is that the same ECU as a 93 TT Auto Supra has?
-
Well if it does indeed turn out to be the problem if there's anyone on here with an ECU with a lower price I would be interested?
-
If it wasnt too much more I'd go new but I just cant find one anywhere. I darent ring Toyota near me, they quoted 1700 quid to supply and fit a water pump a few months ago!
-
My little boy was ill this weekend so I havent had chance, I'll combine the two jobs when Scooter's arrives and check my old one at the same time, obviously if there's no difference with either its academic but I'm hopeful. I've found a replacement I can buy if it is the ECU but they want 450 for it, is that right? Seems rather steep but auto ones seem rarer for some reason?
-
Hi Scooter I just checked and the message hasnt gone through, it says you've exceeded your message quota and you need to clear some space, can you come back to me and we'll sort this out, I'm desperate to know if its the ECU causing this so anything i can do to help I am happy to.
-
Yes of course feel free to mark it in any way you like I'm nothing if not honest and will return the right one but I wont be offended by such measures.
-
I've replied to the PM let me know if there's any problems as it doesnt seem to be in the sent items of the PM section
-
It just occured to me you dont know me from Adam and I could go off cackling into the fog like Jack the Ripper with the ECU, I'm happy to leave a deposit too if you want?
-
This would be very useful, I am happy to pay shipping or whatever just to borrow it? You could just bang it in the post first class recorded to me and send me your paypal and I will pay it now or whatever suits you? Then if the symptoms change I will know I've found the problem.
-
Hi Frank thanks for that I will have a nosey at the weekend at that! I do still want one though, so does anyone have one they want to sell?
-
Hi All Anyone have a spare non VVTI ECU they want to sell for my JDM TT Auto? I want ot swap it out to see if it helps my gearbox issues. Have cash waiting.....
-
Should I need one I assume its just referred to as an ECU as oppose to a throttle ECU etc or are they one and the same thing? Again, please excuse my ignorance, if you wanted information on how to get a 1997 game to work on Windows 10 I am a rocket scientist but you may have noticed this is not my field.....
-
Other than the gear slipping would there be any obvious signs of this being the case?
-
i think I defo need new calipers and if this doesnt stop the squeal at least its cost me next to nothing as I have all the bits already. But yes I am on the hunt for new ones!
-
Fair enough David thanks. I had a service with lots of obvious problems with the car repaired early on but this was at a local garage and I dont know what oil was put in the AT, thats what I meant more than anything else, I just thought replacing it with top quality new stuff would be better if I dont mind paying but I take yur point if it aint broke why replace it. I should have time tomorrow to do this anyway and it may not fix it but fingers crossed
-
Sorry perhaps I should have made that clearer too, when the Toyota Pads go back in the caliper on that corner is going to be checked and sorted too.
-
Thanks for all the kind words and some more frank ones! I take them all with good humour as intended. So to clarify, I thought initially the problem was brakes, its clearly not. I am only swapping back to Toyota ones as my CW ones squeal at low speed and also under heavy braking so as I have a new set of Toyota pads sat in my garage a bill for a couple of hours labour will hopefully allow me to rid myself of my Supra tinnitus and then I'll find a set of UK calipers when I can. For the gearbox it is also obviously as many people on here say overfull. So this weekend I will totally drain the sump and measure what comes out and then put exactly 2 litres back in the top wait 15 minutes and dip it to see if it is right for cold, then do some driving and going up and down the gears and dip it to see if it is right for hot and of course if the problem has gone. This is the basic consensus of the advice given and seems to make perfect sense but if I have got anything wrong please let me know.
-
I would totally agree agree with you Mike but unfortunately I had a motorbike accident when I was 18 which left me with a 'Barry Sheen' rebuild required on my left leg so autos are the only choice for me unfortunately!
-
I've done this and one is hotter than the other, i am only swapping the CW pads out now because they squeal
-
Hi Ric Sorry you've lost me, I've done the heat testing and said one of the brakes is hotter, I've taken Davids advice and am preparing to drop the level of ATF slowly and carefully and have bought a bottle in case I accidentally remove too much - what have I done wrong other than try to fix my car and try to follow the advice of the people on here? I thought that was what a forum's main purpose was, so people with less knowledge like me could ask questions and try and solve problems which is exactly what I am trying to do here. If you were to go on a retro games forum I would be helping you get an old game going or whatever?
