Like Steve has said its not ideal, but then having no cover isn't going to help either unless you have a friend with a car trailer who will come over to Europe and pick you up.... Over the years a few cars have had to be picked up and brought back, I hope it's never me, but all the cars have made it back even though it's been a less than ideal journey..
To put it into perspective a few years ago I broke down on the m25, at around 7pm, I was about an hour from home (near Oxford) I didn't get home until 1am because of the antics of the recovery services..... But I did get home lol

What time do the trains run on that line? Might be a consideration....
Also whilst I agree with the "go listen" idea they problem with that is your doing exactly that.... In reality you wouldn't sit watching to trying to hear the train....
Personally I wouldn't but then I've lived in a very rural location all my life so it would drive me mad...

I don't know the MOT requirements over here in regards to date of tyres, but like you I wouldn't touch tyres that old either.
Perhaps there's uses people buy old tyres for, drifting maybe.
