  1. thanks for the responses. Between the three of you it sounds like the simplest initial option is to swap the entire housing for an early auto TT LSD which should bolt right up. By chance I think I can locate one as Jezz just took one off an auto TT supra I had him convert to manual. Just need to have him track it down.... When I get the v8 car back from the bodyshop I need to check the actual trans code to confirm the ratios in the box but I think they are closer to the auto ratios (i.e. relatively high numerically) than the manual which would mean the auto CWP/diff would match nicely (3.7?) as opposed to the manual one (nearer 3-3.2?). The NA diff I have at the moment (4:1) is a little bit high. I suppose checking the g-box ratios is the first step. May be worth fitting the TRD diff anyway (new bearings seals etc) rather than mess around with an old unit which is more likely to let me down later. Either way it doesnt address the issue of the strength of the CWP. Im not going crazy with power so hope the standard toyota one will do. Interesting snippet of info Chris re: different sizes and strengths. Ive seen guys running low 10s on slicks with what I assume is the standard CWP so I assume it will do for now - dont fancy fitting a ford 9" rear end! Jamie when you say youve broken two diffs is that the diff unit itself or the CWP/losing teeth? I know it can be a horrible experience - on other cars Ive had pieces of diff blow holes in the housing and leave a trail of parts down the road. I know you like to "enjoy" your cars though... was at Turbofit once when you were "road-testing" some mods they had just done and you disappeared up the road sideways in a cloud of smoke leaving two black lines..... Cheers Paul
  2. Ive gota an auto NA with an open diff with a manual & v8 conversion and I now need to change the rear end to cope. Searching previous threads I know rearends come in large and small housings and that apparently all the cars other than the early 6-speeds have the smaller housing and that there are different diff ratios NA/6sp/Auto. I've seen lots of threads stating that the NA diff is very weak and from what I have seen the TT one is very durable. I need to decide whether to swap my entire NA auto housing for one with an LSD in it already or use an aftermarket LSD like the TRD one in my existing housing. The car is ultimately going to have around 600bhp. Do people think the stock Toyota LSD will cope? Also how much better is the performance of the aftermarket diffs? I will use the car on the road, some dragging just for fun and some track days. The real question I had in relation to just getting an aftermarket diff centre is whether the NA crown wheel and pinion would still be a weak link? Is the NA stuff weaker than the TT version even if I uprate the actual diff itself? Are the NA half shafts the same? Also I assume a TT complete housing would bolt up to the NA half shafts and rear prop? Can anyone confirm? All info much appreciated! Cheers Paul
  3. Jamie looks like I am about 50th in the que but if no one else comes up with the readies I can drop by and pick them up with cash. Could do this weekend but probably too early to know whether they are still available so I will get back in line!! cheers P
  4. sorry - should have put this in projects section. Can someone move it? cheers Paul
  5. Bought this Supra with chevy small block v8 and T56 box off RXv8(top bloke) as it is something totally different and I'm a muscle car fan at heart! Couldnt resist. Original thread: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=132766&highlight=cowl I've got another black 93 Supra TT 6 speed BPU with hybrids which I love (you can't beat boost - problem is you always want more!!) but it now has to go to fund the next phase for the v8. When I have finished swapping over some parts over to the v8 (gibson trimmed seats, strut brace, mint wheels, rear spoiler, Tanabe sustec pro coilovers etc) I will post the TT up for sale on the forum. rxv8 did a really nice job so far with the v8 - really inspired combination of SBC and T56 with tidy fabrication etc but it does need some finishing/cosmetics, including a different rear end - the NA diff isnt going to last and is open so just spins up one tyre. I have a LSD off an previous TT auto which I will see if it goes in for now (is the NA and TT diff casing and prop the same?). I'm looking for a 6-speed LSD as that will drop the ratio (numerically) for a better match with the g/box ratios. Also still overheating with repeated air locks so I've a header tank to go on to replace the thermostat housing so the bleed/fill point is the heightest point in the cooling system. This has worked for me in the past where the rad is lower than the engine top so I figure I'll give it a go. The car is currently in the bodyshop for a Whifbitz front bumper and Veilside overfenders. Will post up some pics when that's done. Not sure about the colour yet - either I'll stick with black or perhaps pearl or metallic dark gunmetal (like the Aston Martin colour). Maybe I can't resist some shelby stripes in black but sure you guys will hate that! Needs a small bonnet bulge to clear the intake. As you can probably tell I'm getting a bit overexcited about this project and my credit card is taking a beat down because I also came across an as new 2nd hand procharger supercharger kit whilst I was in US with work a few weeks ago so that will go on when I get the car back.....should make it even more interesting. I dont know whether the engine has forged pistons, rods or crank but i understand it was previously running 150bhp(?) of nitrous when it lived in a camaro without any issues (might explain big cam and lowish compression of about 9:1?) so hopefully I can get away with moderate boost (6psi? :D http://www.procharger.com/index.html Will keep you posted with some pictures. I also have an old 63 chevy biscayne with a 409ci. BBC (W head) which needs finishing and bringing out to play....has run 11 dead in 1/4 but I don't have the cash to finish this and the supra ...my eyes are bigger than my wallet..!! Cheers Paul ps. check out the mustang the guy I bought the procharger is running - not Jap but as similar as a US car can get. He said it is pulling 15 lbs of boost through a forged out 4.6 liter, pretty much maxing out the P-1sc procharger in it tring to get to 520 rwhp. Has a 5spd, but he is working on getting a Tremec T-56 tranny for that 6th gear! All in good time lol. I also attached some pictures of the chevy if you like that kind of thing....
