Have you had your cambelt changed recently? If so did whoever did it use heat on the bottom pulley bolt at all? If so, id be having a word with them.

So how will "like for like" get worked out if the worst was to happen? I have a huge distrust of insurance companies, I think if its all down in black and white it will be harder for them to stiff me.

Checked the oil level in the correct way? Engine running, slowly run thru all the gears a couple of times while stationary and the check it.

Are the small gauge layouts the same on UK and US cars? They aren't on prefacelift so american dials wont fit.

I made something similar from aluminium and thick rubber. The weight sits on the sil and underside, not on the thin part. Works fine and I had it sat on them for weeks when I did my manual conversion.

Sorry i missed the post where you said year and model. The fan switch is seperate and on one side of the rad low down. IIRC the stat itself is located in a casting behind the cambelt on the 1.4(8v), hope you dont have to replace it as you have to remove the cambelt which will mean a new one and while your there, check the state of the pullys. As has been said, bidge the fan connections and see if it still overheats.

If its the old MK2 or 3 Astra (probably later i dont know about them) they have a seperate thermostatic fan switch for the fan, usually located on one side of the rad near the bottom. Also the guage sender, usually at the front left of the engine near the thermostat often gets badly corroded, its only a crimp connector so just give it a clean up with a bit of emery. If it is a 1.4 or IIRC some 1.3's they hid the thermostat under the cambelt and its a bastard of a job. If the fan isnt cutting in, the fan switch is the first place to look.

Doesnt sound too bad to me, is the car garaged ect? what power did you quote to them?
