How-To Fit Oil-Cooler & Thermostat

Recommended Posts

The harder you work a transmission the hotter it will get & additional-power WILL require additional-cooling

9 out of 10 transmission failures are because of overheating, nevertheless, same as for engines, too cold is bad too

Automatic transmissions have an optimum operating temperature range http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/group.php?discussionid=154&do=discuss

Running additional cooling via a thermostat is the solution

Mocal Oil Thermostat installation

(Performed free of charge by "a disabled person who doesn't have public liability insurance".) :rlol:

(Note: These hard lines look different because they are different.)

Pictured; flow-line from Supra 2JZA80-GTE A340E & return-line from Soarer 1UZ-FE A341E in Supra with 1UZ-FE VVT-i & A340E-GTE/GE Hybrid Transmission.

(Yes, the ends of these hard lines do need more support) :mail: Delboy52

Before up to temp; ATF circulation is via the temperature regulator in radiator only, as OE.

When up to temp; the stat opens and circulates ATF through both the OE temperature regulator and additional cooler(s).

Oil-cooler(s) can be mounted inside n.s. wing if you prefer?

Tip: It might appear counter intuitive to insulate cooling-hoses, nevertheless, using foam pipe-lagging is a rally-car build trick to protect the hoses from chafing in this 'can't be seen' place.

Easy-fit oil cooler kit(s).

350 to 400ftlb = OE temp-stabiliser + stat + 1 x cooler.

400 to 500ftlb = OE temp-stabiliser + stat + 2 x coolers + A650E sump.

500 to 600ftlb = OE temp-stabiliser + stat + 3 x coolers + A650E sump + remote filter.

With a thermostat fitted it's not possible to over-cool, however, fitting an ATF temperature gauge is the sensible way to learn reality of cooling required!

Should you have a shiny aluminium-radiator without the coolant-circuit interface cooler/heater temperature-stabiliser and wish that you had one...

Mocal make a pretty one with a Laminova core. :)
