ATF Partial Change - Full-Flush + How-To Read Dip-Stick

Recommended Posts

Correct Maintenance of Automatic Transmission Fluid

15k miles / 1 year - Schedule 1: ATF partial-change. Drain transmission sump & refill via dipstick-tube, around 2 litres. (A650E sump, 3 litres)

30k miles / 2 years - Schedule 2: Clean sump & magnets, re-torque v.b bolts, fit new strainer & ATF partial-change.

After neglect/abuse - Schedule 3: Clean sump & magnets, re-torque v.b bolts, clean solenoids, fit new strainer & ATF full-flush.

9/10 Supra automatic transmissions have been ignored & abused by :idiot: 's.

9/10 Supra automatic transmissions have not been & are not serviced correctly. :looney:

When buying an automatic Supra, unless it has an official & correct service-record for the transmission.

Non - :idiot: 's clean the sump & magnets, re-torque v.b bolts, clean solenoids, fit new strainer & full-flush with recommended ATF. :innocent:

From this known datum, then return to recommended service-schedules &/or ATF temperature.

Fluid level is extremely important, car should be on level ground, check level in "N" with engine running after first selecting each gear with the stick.

Tip: Fluid should be translucent & dark cherry red. Black ATF with burnt smell is very bad news.

Tip: Have a good look at the marks on the dipstick so to understand what it is telling you.

Tip: After topping up it will take 10 minutes for the tube to drain and show a clear reading on dipstick.

Tip: If you are in a hurry, you may pick up the true level on the top of the tube side of the stick, the clue is, a lower level reading.

Tip: Always check the level again later.

Should the transmission fluid be poorly maintained and require a full flush?

The Easiest Way To Do a Full Flush

Drain sump (2 litres), refit plug, pour 6.5 litres (N/A total volume 7.2 litres or T.T. total volume 8.2 litres) of new fluid in via funnel in dipstick tube, remove a hose from the ATF cooler circuit, hold over bucket, have an assistant start the engine, run until clean new fluid shows, turn off engine, reconnect hose, give dipstick tube time to drain, restart engine and top up transmission to dipstick mark. :) (If you put more than 6.5 litres in, it will overflow from the top breather.)

Tip: Undo radiator union in flow line.

Tip: It's a lot tidier to have the fluid coming out the end of a flexible hose, than out of a fixed pipe or union. :D

Tip: Mark a 5 litre for N/A or 6 litre for T.T. level onto your bucket, so you know thereabouts when to expect the clean stuff to arrive.

Strainer-change - drop the pan and there it is. :)

Tip: It may run ATF up your sleeve when taken off. :D

Tip: Whilst you can get at them, re-torque all valve-body 10mm-head bolts to 7ftlb.

Tip: Don't use sump gasket, clean both surfaces with brake-cleaner and use Loctite Grey SI 5660.

(Strainer-bolts 7ftlb - sump-bolts 6.5ftlb only)

How to

1. Jack up car

2. Use 14mm spanner to undo drain plug

3. Drain old ATF into drip tray

4. Use 10mm socket & ratchet to undo pan bolts

5. Use hammer and wood chisel or proper tool to break seal on pan

6. Clean magnets with mechanics wipe

7. Good idea to remove solenoids and clean them with brake cleaner whilst you are in there

8. Good idea to check torque on valve-body bolts whilst you're in there, 7ftlb

9. Use 10mm socket for changing strainer and checking valve-body bolts

10. Use torque wrench to tighten strainer bolts to 7ftlb

11. Use chisel to clean off old RTV

12. Use brake cleaner to degrease sealant faces

13. Apply a 6mm bead of RTV to sump

14. Replace sump bolts torqued to 6.5ftlb

15. Pour 6.5 litres of ATF into dipstick tube

16. Remove ATF "flow" line from cooler and hold over bucket

17. Start engine and run until fresh fluid can be seen

18. Have an assistant pour in another litre whilst the engine is running

19. Turn off engine and reconnect pipe

20. Top up transmission to correct mark on dipstick

Note: If you try and pour in the whole 8 litres, it comes out of the vent at the top and make a mess on the drive.
