Gen 6 Celica info

I am not sure if this should go here on tech other but anyway.

I have had my 1994 Gen 6 Auto Celica for a number of years and it has always run fine and dandy. In fact, I drove it down here to Kos back in June and it never missed a beat but just recently I have noticed the fuel consumption is not quite as good as it was.

I am currently getting about 25 MPG and wondered if you think this should be better. The car was last serviced in May and has since done about 4000 miles. I currently do a lot of short trips of no more than 4-5 miles per time. Does that affect the MPG? I also read that after a while (and higher mileage) I may need to change the O2 sensor. My car has now done about 100k miles - so should I look to change this?

Now, bear in mind that I currently spend about 20 euro per week tops so should I bother at all?

Probably worth giving the plug and filter a change for the money it'll cost you but the 02 sensor could be the cause of your woes.

I guess an auto Celica on short journeys is never going to be the ultimate MPG machine though so maybe 25mpg is OK.

i'd say 4-5 miles is too long to walk for you , specially if your not used to it, go on ebay and look at some pedal bikes. something there might take you're fancy. If those short trips involve stop-starting, like at lights or to give way, then that's thats going to reduce mpg.

It's the short trips CJ.

(And the extra weight it's probably carrying around these days too. ;) )

I think you are right. It must be all those free DVD's I get sent ;)

During the season I walk about 5 miles a night but now that has ended the exercise level is quite low. Pedal bike hey? You obviously didn't read my "I've been knocked down" thread. :(

Cj, the car might benefit from a longer spirited blast, just to clear the cobwebs out!

My Gen4 auto Celica I'm sure, returned better figures than that, but as CW the short journeys are a mpg killer.

As you have all said, it is definitely the short trips - so maybe 25 mpg is not too bad after all

The 3sfe engine (138bhp) was in the first batch of gen6 celica's and am sure was a single cam engine , toyota quicky realised it was a bit poo and quickly changed the GT engine to the more powerful 3sge (178bhp) . I had a 94 Gen6 GT import and it had the 3sfe engine and could get 30 odd mpg maybe more .... but when the big ends went i up-graded to the 3sge and found that it was a bit worse on fuel , delivering maybe only 25mpg .

I think I will give her a service soon and see if that helps. I might also change the O2 sensor as that cannot cost much eh?

Dunno mate, my technical experience limit stretches only as far as air filters (and maybe the occasional delimit-fitting ;)).

EDIT - Plus, I guess, it depends on what you call "much" - is stuff cheap out there? I know my mate in Malta likes emailing me to say he can get 5 pints down the pub for the equivalent of about a pound!

Well I wish I had done the delimiter on mine now as i could do with taking it off to go back to KMH but have no idea how to do it :(

Well, certain things are very cheap out here. Rent, electric, water, food etc are all cheap. Beer is not too bad providing you dont go to the tourist areas and I pay 2 euro for a pint bottle of Heineken. Spirits and wine are incredibly cheap are can be bought almost anywhere.

On the Celica I assume? If it were a Supra then I'd be happy to help mate. :(
