Mispronunciations

I was talking to a mate today and the above subject came up. Some of the worst (and silliest) that I remember being guilty of are with bands. Like....

I could not understand why anyone would want to be called Metal Licker (Metallica) or the sense behind Inks (Inxs) and why a Scotsman would want to do rap was beyond me - McHammer (MC Hammer).

Ah well, we live and learn eh? Any of you had similar experiences or am I the only thick one out here. :D

There are a few that have come up on the forum that I've not been sure about, peoples names and things like Greddy (some people say GeeReady, I thought it was just greddy, some people on here seem to think it's Greedy).

This morning, I said the word plethora, with emphasis on 'pleth', but was told the emphasis is on 'OR', with 'pleth' said quicker, which one!?!?!?

And schedule, it should be shedule, and I won't let anyone disagree, but so many people say sKedule, grrr.

Nice one :D

I recall last year, my wifes parents had a double glazing salesman over to quote for a conservatory.

He couldn't wait to tell me after that whilst they were having a coffee and agreeing the final prices, my mum in law said, "Oh! I forgot to ask you, but do you do facials?

This coupled with the time he was about to pick up a particularly large Caterpillar, she remarked, "leave it alone and let it crawl under a bush to turn into a clitoris!"

The finale though was when my wife started shopping at the cheap supermarkets, Aldis and Liddl. She came home thrilled and said, "I can't believe how cheap the food is in that shop you go to... what do you call it now, Dildo's!"

She is priceless!

My wife in gales of laughter said "It's Tutankamun you daft prick!!".......

It should actually be pronounced differently to the usual "... toot - 'n' - car - m'n ..." that most people say, it should be more like "... toot - ankh (clear throat at the end, like two 'L's together in welsh) - amon ..." The 'n' on the end is almost silent as well, almost like 'amoh'.

Actually, the correct way to to pronounce LL as written in Welsh is to place your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your teeth, widen your mouth and blow gently. The sound you are thinking about (from the back of the throat) comes from pronouncing the letter CH :)

Either way I was made to feel like a gobshite and rightly so...;)
