Tricky-Ricky
I want a new "budget" laptop, any suggestions? would prefer core duo and at least 1 gig of ram, and it be reasonably reliable and pay as little as possible, probably asking too much. michael
It pains me to say it but Currys / PC World etc - same group and enough buying power to get bulk and sell cheaply, £399 should see you with a decent system that exceeds your requirements. edge
Just try and steer away from budget brands. Know quite a few people who have had endless issues with budget named laptops. Go for cheap but try and get a well known one.
michael
And test the speakers, a lot of the cheaper end ones don't even have stereo and the one speaker they do have is poop.
michael
Currys one - COMPAQ C757 * Intel Pentium Dual Core T2310 Processor * (1.46GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1MB Cache) * Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium * 2GB Memory * 80GB Hard Drive Capacity £399 - online only, £499 in the shop. If you can be arsed to shop around you can probably pick up similar without the Compaq badge.
steb9780
Just got a Dell Inspiron 1520, I am well impressed with it so far. It's a bit above the budget you have, but it's quite well specced, they do them for around £299-399 too. Mine has 2.2ghz core 2 duo, 250gb hard drive, 2gb ram, wi-fi, bluetooth, 15.4" wxga with truelife, vista home premium.
robin
If you can afford a bit more look at the lenovo thinkpad laptops. Expensive but tough as anything. I've dropped mine onto a concrete floor a few times and it's still fine. They also have the best built in speakers I have heard in a laptop. Battery life is good too, my bog standard 6 cell can go for 4 hours watching a DVD. http://www.pc.ibm.com/uk/thinkpad/

I've managed to build a reasonable Inspiron 1520 laptop for around £390 on the Dell website, but none of the spec you mention there! You've managed to get an extra 1gb ram, bluetooth, and a 250gb hdd for how much extra? The one thing I can't believe is that Dell charge an extra £60 for delivery! Rip off! Sorry I have worded it badly (blame the Magners last night). The laptop was closer to £700. I meant that the 1520 is a good laptop, but mine will be to a higher spec. than the cheaper ones. But they do the lesser specced ones for Either £299 or £399. Sorry if I worded that badly. Why are Dell charging you for delivery, I have had 2 laptops now and never paod for delivery. Try some of these codes mate, to see if you can get some money off. Like £70 off your first order etc. http://www.vouchercodes.com/voucherpages/dell.htm
Muffleman
Believe it or not, I bought a Medion laptop from Woolworths and it has been faultless ! The wireless logs on and holds connection well, quite a feat for wireless However, I have been keeping my eye on the Dell Latitude 630 ATG, but at £1500 I decided it was a bit steep. Picked one up on ebay just this week, 630 ATG 2gb ram, 80gb hard drive, 3yr onsite warranty - £710 ! Well pleased

I really don't understand why I'm being charged that much for delivery, as its putting me off buying it at the moment. I will call them to ask why it costs so much. Incidentally, when I had that money stolen from my debit card recently (its all back again now btw), one of the places the money went was Dell, so maybe I don't 'qualify' for a new customer, as none of those codes work Funny thing is, as I received the invoice for that fraudulent order, the thieves were only charged £11 for their whole enormous delivery!
