JustGav
Whats a brown out?? Sounds like an underwear mishap Scott =op A brown out is when the voltage drops rather than goes up like a surge, such as when a fridge kicks in or similar to that... Brownout where the voltage level is below the normal minimum level specified for the system. Systems supplied with three-phase electric power also suffer brownouts if one or more phases are absent, at reduced voltage, or incorrectly phased. Such malfunctions are particularly damaging to electric motors. Some brownouts, called voltage reductions, are made intentionally to prevent a full power outage. In the PC world, it can cause memory errors and random malfunctions...
JustGav
I am still confused with this but am veering towards the APC solution as that means just plugging something rather than paying someone to faff about inside my PC Col, the beauty with something like the apc is that you unplug the cable going to your power supply and simply plug it into the APC, job done... and if you have a power outage, you can at least save what you were doing... Thank you my friend. That makes sense to me. Now to find out if they sell them on the island and if so, how much they are. Failing that, it will be Ebay and pay a shit load of carriage fee. JustGav
CJ, I have a slightly bigger one at the contract I've been working on, well I've got 4 of them... this is one of them..... Needless to say this is a would run your PC (and your house) for about a week without power *grin* There is no reason there wouldn't be something similar to the smaller APC's on the island, they are fairly common place now. JustGav
Wow, that's nearly twice as big as ours. Pete, to be fair, it is a Tier 3 datacentre with all the trimmings including 4 x 500kVA UPSs, and it cost a bit. The floor space is capable of supporting 1MW's worth of IT equipment. Twin 1500kVA gennies out the back. Little overkill but hey I'd plug my laptop in confident it would be okay for a month or so if there was no electricity in Berkshire. CJ
As an update, I bought one of these but had to pay 80 euros. It seems as if everything electrical and computer based costs more out here
CJ
This is now working fine and dandy (well at least I think so as sod's law dictates there hasn't been a power cut since I bought it) but I have one question. When I shut to PC off at night, should I also shut off the UPS or just leave it turned on?
