Bob
Does anyone know if there are any particular Building Regs / British Standards specifically for the design and/or construction of schools? Or whether there any European or International regs governing this? Or is it just standard BRs? Thought I'd ask as there's a broad knowledge-base on here

Thought I'd ask as there's a broad knowledge-base on here Im an architectural techinician, and deal with building regs day in day out. The is not a specific section for schools mate. All the building works would have to comply to the sections, and a formal plannig and later building control application would have to be made, where local authorities could browse the plans, and pick up on any items that dont conform to the new regs. You can download them for free on the internet.
Rob Dublin
Lots, from health and safety guidlines, sanitary ware installation, road safety (crossings etc) lighting, stairs.... list goes on. Google BSI regulations for more info, you may need to subscribe as the information is not always free. edit... they aren't sprcifically in one booklet but mentioned in several. Bob
Cheers Ady, that's what I though. Just wanted to confirm, as one of the precincts for my current project is going through the initial development stages and a new school is part of it. Its difficult because the building regulations is split into residential, and non residential - and a school falls into neither. With regards to a british standard, then i will have a look on the IHST web site ofr you now - give me 2 mins! Im shure there will be a guide line. Also the NEW METRIC HANDBOOK is a good source for design issues!!!!

Guest IainS
I am a building service consultant and have worked on a number of schools recently. You have to comply with non-domestic Regs, many BS's (that are generally referred to in the Regs) and, if you want goverment funding, there are a load of 'Building Bulletins' issued by the DfES that have to be complied with (eg BB93-school acoustics). Bob
Bearing in mind the construction is in Bahrain: We've got a developer wanting to build the school. As the Project Management team, we want to refer to the British regs for development control. Local regs are fairly loose to say the least, but it's the company's ethos to use british standards as they are generally the highest in the world. So as far as I can see, as long as it complies with the relevent Building Regs for non-domestic buildings, we should be ok (My background is Civils, btw - hence me not having used the building regs very often!) As Ian said - there is funding ect available if you 'go green' and youse sustainable resources - might be worth bearing in mind Must be a pretty huge development for it to include a school? Im guessing this is a 5 Million Plus development?? Generally your correct, non resi building regs need to be considered, but, in some circumstances, and giving good argument for and against, can be waivered. Ive just finished my honors degree in architectural design, and building regs was an enjoyable unit on the course

Bob
Many thanks for the offer mate, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that the company may already have an Athens pass-code for the BSI webiste - I'll have a look into that rather than you waste your time sending me stuff over the (very slow) broadband connection here!
