Steviekid
I've discovered that my tax codes for the last three years have all been wrong due to our accountants messing up/not even doing P11Ds. Does anyone know if you can make an appointment at the inland revenue to go in and sort this kind of thing out face to face? It would be a hell of a lot easier as it's getting really complicated now. ozz
We tried to get to see them face to face and was told its all call centre run now and they gave us a phone number. My brother in law had the wrong tax code for 3 years, IR discovered and asked him for 4k immediatly. After writing letters he got it wiped out. Many people pay the wrong amount of tax - mostly if you change jobs. The IR will not do anything if it is in your favour so it is always worth checking annually - missus checked mine and hers and we were owed nearly 2k which would have been lost. Ewen
Not pleasant, but I would recommend you ring them and ask them to send you a tax return form for each of the three years you think you have been taxed incorrectly. Although scary looking beasties, filling in these forms are the one and only way of getting it right in my opinion, and there is good on-line help with filling the forms out. A word of warning:) Once you get sent a tax return for whatever reason, you will probably get sent one every year. A point to remember is that the IR have all your records on computer. If a mistakes been made, it will be logged on their system, it just needs you to point them in the right direction. If you can, insist on getting a copy of the P11s etc from your accountants, if they cant stump up, the IR should have the figures already. If no figures are logged, it will be up to you to show what figures were involved. You are responsible for your tax coding and NIC, not your companies accountants or the IR...mistakes by others are annoying, but in their eyes its up to you to make sure the info is correct, and tell the IR if it isnt. Steviekid
what type of P11d stuff are we talking about? cars + fuel, Healthcare.......... Company car. A form wasn't done at all for 2004-2005, and they were wrong for 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. I've underpaid for two years and overpaid for one year and am currently overpaying. Having spent a lot of time recently working all this out, I now fully understand how all the codes work and how P11d's should be filled out. I understand it far better than a couple of people I've spoken to at the inland revenue that's for sure. They seem to manage to conveniently gloss over the fact I drastically overpaid for four months last year every single time I phone up too.

It was the main tax return forms I was talking about Stevie...the IR bods if pushed will ask you to fill them out anyway I reckon. I sympathise, tax is a nightmare my end too. I pushed for a face to face with a human at my local tax office recently, and after a bit of pushing and admitting I was thick and needed help, they gave me an appointment. Hope it pans out in your favour.
Steviekid
Hope it pans out in your favour. Cheers mate. I've worked out that worst case scenario I owe around £500 once everything cancels out. Before I worked it all out I was worried I'd owe £2-3k so not too bad really. neil tt
I have come to the conclusion that you might as well give them everything you earn, as they seem to take the best part of it anyway:(
ivan
I phoned up the other day asking if I could do anything about claiming the tax back on my pension as I'm not working now. A very helpful Welshman ( ) has taken the case on board and assures me that I'll be seeing a cheque and an increase in my pension very shortly. I've already had my new tax code through so watch this space.

ivan
Standard non-contrib army pension that started in '98 when I got out. It becomes index linked in 3 years time. After the reduction for my commutation payout it amounts to about the same as my tax allowance. I've been paying basic rate tax on it even though I'm not working or claiming benefit, hence the rebate. I'm pretty sure they've changed the rules on military pensions now, but I joined under the old contract.

Guest Killer Heels
Got an appointment to go in and get it all sorted out next week. Glad to hear you are getting somewhere with them. They can be a right pain in the ass if you ask me. Just for future if you change the company car it is worth filling in a P46 Car everytime. This can be downloaded off the website and is very basic to fill in. It changes you tax code almost immediately so there are no nasty surprises at the end of the year. Good luck with the Revenue Kate
