steb9780
Has anybody changed the electric window mechanism on their car?? Just wondering if there's any tips on doing it, or is it a simple enough job. I know I did read that having fat stumpy digits makes it difficult
Jezz
Ok here goes. Deep breath.......... Start with the window UP. Remove the door card.. 5 screws along the bottom, 2 screws covered by plastic buttons where the card meets the dash, then the little push out clips, 2 on outer edge, and one where the card meets the dash. Remove the handle surround screw and gently pull out the surround. There is a 10mm cross head bolt inside, this needs to be undone. Then finally the screw covered by a cap in the pad apperture (the bit on the doorcard where you put your phone and fags ). Then, pull the doorcard UP to remove it, but dont forget to unplug the switch mutiplug before you lift it completely away. Removing the mech... Pull away the plastic draught gaurd, and undo the 3 cross head 10mm bots holding the handle in place, and the 4 10mm bolts holding the black plate in place. Now undo the 3 10mm long bolts that the motor is held in by. Next, undo the 10mm bolt at the bottom of the door with the 2 big white plastic wind out washers on each side and unwind the the plastic thing so it comes off, and you should now be able to pull the little metal bracket out of the way. Now, at the top of the mechanisms runner, you'll find the 3 12mm bolts where the glass attaches to the runner, the bolts for these have there own holes in the door frame so you can get a socket in, as you're removing the last of the 3 12mm bolts SUPPORT THE GLASS, then once the bolts out, lower the glass into the door by hand, then undo the 2 10mm nuts located on the top edge of the door frame, twist the mechanism clockwise and pull her out. Reverse procedure to re-install.
Ewen
Its simple enough, but I can suggest the following... Have someone around to help hold the weight of the glass when unbolting and re-bolting in the mechanism carrier. The glass is fairly heavy and the edges of the holes in the metalwork are fairly sharp. When re-bolting the glass in, start with the bolts positioned dead-centre to the elongated mounting holes...you may be lucky and the glass is in exactly the right place / angle etc first time this way. Theres a plastic adjuster at the bottom of the carrier...this adjusts the glass inwards and outwards, and will make the window close closer or further away from the top and rear seal. After you have re-assembled the mechanism, dont put the door card back on straight away....re-connect the switchgear temporarily (unscrew it from the door card) to check whether the window shuts properly...this will save you having to take the door card off again if further adjustment is needed. I have already had the door card off and all the motor to find the problem. I just needed to know how the mechanism splits from the glass and how best to get it out. I think you explained all that. Come to think of it with such a good write up, you've pretty much supplied and fitted the new one.

steb9780
Yeah that, it's easily missed. What's the best way of adjusting this then. Putting the window up and then adjusting so it's pressing against the seals??
Ewen
What's the best way of adjusting this then. Putting the window up and then adjusting so it's pressing against the seals?? Thats what I ended up doing. You may be lucky and the window still seals properly without adjusting it at all. I wasnt, and first time there was a slight gap between glass and seal...adjust it too far and the door will be hard to close etc etc.
Shane
Thats what I ended up doing. You may be lucky and the window still seals properly without adjusting it at all. I wasnt, and first time there was a slight gap between glass and seal...adjust it too far and the door will be hard to close etc etc. Took me two or three adjustment attempts before I got the door to close properly everytime. Word of warning, don't get the black sticky sealeant used on the draught guard on your clothes, it's very waterproof and doesn't wash out. My mech fell to pieces when I was on my way back from holls in France....that was fun. Good luck.
steb9780
All done now. Thanks! For some strange reason I was thinking the holes in the glass adjusted the closing position. I was having a bit of a moment. Then I came in and re-read this post and realised what I should have been adjusting. Anyway adjusted it and got it right, then thought I'll make sure everything works. Put the window up and down a few times only for it to have moved I should have thought that it would first time round, so I re-did it again and all is well. Thanks Jezzy for the motor by the way I'll leave you some feedback in a mo'
