Motorola, Kenwood or Sommerkamp/Yaesu are generally the most reliable, Motorola are often on offer but depends what you want to spend against how much use you give them.Almost any will do the job, try builders suppliers etc as they are often used on site.

Just be aware that the legal ones that use the UK "licence free" 446 Mhz frequeny allocation, usually say "up to 2 km range"

This is about as factual as stating that a standard Nissan Micra can keep up with a Supra on a motorway.

That said if you only need to use them for a short distance they can be fine.

At 70 it might!!! But there's more chance of the radios working over more than 2km, you could calculate the range if you wanted to, use k4 over3 graph paper to plot the path profile, if i remember correctly the formula is First fresnel zone =131.5 xD1+D2 over D1xD2 x Lambda,_______ Oh Senior Moment!!!! Long time since Catterick Camp 1965

What were we talking about?.

Really looking for one's that have a good range on them. My mates all live within aprox 2mile of each other and were thinking it will be cheaper to use Walkies rather than mobi's all the time.

If you need to talk to someone 2 miles away (or even 1) the legal ones will definitely not work for you I'm afraid. By all means get some from Argos but I assure you you will be taking them back under the 16 day gurantee.

Aside from a better phone deal there are only four options radio wise, I can think of...

1. A licensed PMR set (not cheap) these are much more powerful than the licence free ones.

2. Get a Radio amatuer licence (exam pass required ) then you can talk across huge distances.

3. Get a CB set and licence (not sure about the range of these but some might be ok)

4. Just acquire some decent two way hand held radios

This last option will potentially end up with you being tracked down and prosecuted though :(
