Changing rear wheel bearing

Recommended Posts

I have done it twice now

Normal socket/tool kit plus ball joint splitters to remove the hub from the car. Also need knwledge of how it all 'fits'

15 - 20 ton press and a farily large amount of skill to push old bearing out and press new one in :)

Normally remove hub and take it to toyota or other place with said press and knowledge myself :)

A simple fly press should do it, it's the shock rather than the tonnage IMO. I tried to remove one a few years back using a 75tonne press and it didn't want to know, put it on the fly press and gave it a whack abd it popped out.

I tried to do mine but gave up. The three ball joints you need to split are all different sizes. I ended up buying two different splitters and an angle grinder to modify them to fit. I got two apart but the final onw would not budge.

I ended up getting a complete 2nd hand hub assembly and taking it to a garage. They took all morning and ended up damaging their own ball joint splitter - thankfully not so badly as to stop them doing the job.

Seems to be one of those jobs that either goes smoothly or becomes a right pig.
