Hey All,

I am still running a PIII desktop at home and think its about time to upgrade, what do you think of these components. I hardly play games but do use the comp for photo/movie editing and a small bit of dev work.

* Intel Pentium 4 650 3.4Ghz Socket 775 800mhz 2mb Cache Retail Boxed

* Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3 Socket 775 onboard audio ATX

* 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz PC2-6400 240pin Extra Value Ram

* Innovision 3D 8500GT 256MB DDR2 DVI PCI-E Graphics Card

* Extra Value Black Luster Mid Tower Case - With 500W PSU

* Western Digital WD2500KS 250GB 7200RPM SATAII/300 16MB Cache Hard Drive - OEM

This lot is only about £300 and dont want to spend much more than that really.

:cool:

May work out cheaper if you go for a AMD processor instead of the Pentium.

He's right it would be cheaper but theres advantages and disavantages to both Cpu's so stick with Intel they tend to be more reliable. (Im not saying that because im an Intel partner even though i am its just the honest truth).

Amd tend to be better for games but the new Core Duo's piss all over them with their high Cache. (4mb - 8mb are good chips)!!!

what about looking at dual core cpus?? Also Iam not sure the drive size... for audio video work, would need a load of spare space!!

is the video card enough for what you want/need???

Good point. If you're doing music editing i'd suggest getting a seperate Sound card. Quality is usually higher an a Pci Card rather than onboard although i use onboard and i edit music and dont see a huge diference in quality but its just a thought!

Thanks for the info guys :D

Intel all the way for me, they are more reliable plus I use to work for them ;)

Drive space is fine as my current PC which I do everything on is only a PIII with 80GB.

You can try and tempt me with other options but im not going to say yes until you get a real core 2 duo :)

Think about it, 3 years time, you will be able to plonk a quad core cpu in a core 2 duo envirinment.
