fredm
Just a quickie, anybody know if the cams are held down by the cam covers? I want to remove the covers for painting if they actually hold down and locate the cams it makes the job a whole lot more involving and time consuming because of the need to remove the cambelt etc. Thanks. dangerous brain
The cam shafts are not held down by the cam covers. Are you looking at removing the plastic bits to spray them? Or the whole cam cover top end? If its the whole top end and you don't know what holds the cams down I might suggest you don't have the technical expertise or tools to put the whole thing back together again afterwards. Not trying to be snotty just making an observation.
Soonto_HAS_soop
The cams are held on with seperate items from the cam covers. But as DB says, make 100% sure that you know what you are doing and that you have a little spare time in case anything goes wrong. Ben..
fredm
Hey guys , thats great, thanks for the info. I asked because when looking at the cam covers when fitted to the engine there is no way of telling how the cams are located. I have only owned a Supra for just over 48 hours and only lifted the bonnet of one 6 days ago. Asking the question was the easiest way to find out as I spent a hour this afternoon trying to find a picture on the various sites that would elicit the information I needed. A lot of todays manufacturers do use the cam cover to locate the cams. I'm sure I will manage to put things back in the right order, thanks for your concern anyway. Chris Wilson
The cams have their own bearing caps, underneath, and totally separate from the covers. Only gotchas are if the cover bolts are seized (fairly common, they are poor material and snap easiliy), or you drop something down into the engines innards, which can be very annoying, and good for the likes of folks like myself's bank account
fredm
Good evening Chris thanks for the info. Don't forget to give me a call next week if and when you can fit me in, (red TT transmission oil change). Your right about the subframe bolts, impossible to do while lying on my back on the driveway. I'm going to change the Cambelt too, sooner rather than later, it's only done 20,000 miles but it is 6 years old now. Thanks.

You spawny tw*t. Its only just broken in for ya. The reason I say about effort involved in taking those covers off is there is a lot of crap in the way before you can get to them thats all, in typical fashion there are bits that have to be taken off before you can get to other bits etc etc.

For anyone wondering what I am raving about Fred happened to ring me yesterday to ask about a MKIV UK spec he'd just bought, which just happened to come from a garage less than a mile away from me, and he fetched it over for me to admire. I have only just put fredm and who he is together...
fredm
No No No the cambelt has only done 20,000 miles but it was fitted 6 years ago. The car is a 94' with 80,000 mile on it. I paid over the odds for it too, wife likes it though, can't get her out of it. "Just going shopping dear". "Again , thats the 4th time today!" "VROOOOM!" Gordon F
It's worth changing the cam cover bolts for some nice s/s ones while you're at it. M6x15 cap head if I remember right

I was gonna say, I saw a ridiculously low mile UK car on ebay recently and thought you may have bought that. Oh OK well thats the first job I do regardless of service history on every car I ever buy (replace cambelt). It gives you 60k miles to not have to worry about and you don't have to rely on other peoples honesty.
