SimonR
Hello everyone, At the Crail Thrash last Sunday I was soundly trounced by AndyTT and Bedlam (both registered users on this forum). We all have Twin Turbo Soarers, by the way. My terminals are OK (103.4 mph) but my starts and 60ft times are rubbish and I'm putting this down to traction difficulties. Limited Slip Diffs for Soarers are like hens teeth in this country but I'm advised that one from a MKIV Supra will fit. Can anyone confirm this and, if so, does anyone have one for sale? Thanks. SimonR
Update: I've just found out that the MKIV Supra diff will fit but only from the NA model. The Turbo diff is bigger, apparently. So, does anyone have one for sale or know where one might be available? Thanks.
Guest Terry S
The trouble is Supra LSD's are like Rocking Horse Shit too or expensive when they do come up
Chris Wilson
AFAIK the MKIV TT LSD will fit, as a complete, cased unit, but you may have to change the propshaft to one with a shorter rear section, also the drive shafts may differ. The MKIV TT diff uses two rubber mountings at the top, the Soarer only one, but the subframe has an empty hole waiting to accept the second one. Personally, if you are into drag racing, I think you are wasting your time buying a Supra LSD, it's not a suotable unit for that purpose, import a plate type 2 way LSD from Japan or the US and get it fitted to your unit. SimonR
Thanks Guys. Chris, in what way unsuitable? My (beginners) view is that the purpose of an LSD is to prevent one wheel slipping while the other has traction. Is there more to it than that? AndyTT
Any more info on this type of LSD diff Chris? Andy
Guest Terry S
what is your axle code?
SimonR
A02A, which I believe denotes a 4.083 ratio Open Centre.
AndyTT
Same here, B denotes LSD
AndyTT
We may sound a bit doo wally, dragging a Soarer, but not a lot of people have em' but the Supra in the other hand, well, there's probally a wealth of info out there! Andy
Guest Terry S
OK A = the size of the diff. Any JDM auto Supra LSD will fit and any late ( VVTi ) diff manual or auto. Early JDM manuals and all UK diffs are B type which are much bigger. 02 = the auto gearing on a Supra from memory HTH
SimonR
"A" denotes size? I believe that Soarer diff codes are: A01A - 3.916 ratio Open Centre A01B - 3.916 ratio Torsen LSD A02A - 4.083 ratio Open Centre A02B - 4.083 ratio Torsen LSD (Higher ratio for the V8). Or could it be that the first A is the size and the second is the open/LSD?
Guest Terry S
The A diff is pyshically smaller than a B. The B is a Monster The codes are similar an A02A = an open auto Diff an A03B = a Torsen Manual LSD
SimonR
Thanks Terry. I think that I am going to look into Chris' suggestion about replacing the internals first. I didn't realise that there are different behavior options available from diffs.
Guest Terry S
That was gonna be my next suggestion. Buy a TRD slipper from the US. They are £600 ish for the kit.
Guest Terry S
oh and remember to ask for the auto type, all their manuals have a B type
SimonR
Thanks Terry, but I'm a real cheapskate and they seem a bit pricey to me. I'll try for a Supra LSD first and come back to this option if I don't have any luck.
Guest Terry S
They are expensive, but everything is relative with a Supra...
SimonR
Too true, mate. If I wasn't a cheapskate I would be driving a Supra not a Soarer:)
