CJ
So, I am off on Saturday June 2nd to my beloved Kos and will be driving down. The route I will be taking is here but I could do with some advice from you clever folks as to where you think I should stop on the way. Initially, I thought of the following: Sat night - Karlsruhe - Germany(daily distance driven approx 530 miles) Sun night - Furnitz - Austria (daily distance driven approx 400 miles) Mon night - Sokobanja - Serbia (daily distance driven approx 500miles) Tues night - Platamonas - Greece (daily distance driven approx 350 miles) Wed night - overnight ferry to Kos from Peiraiás Thursday AM - arrive at Kos Do you think that looks sensible? toyotasuprauk
That’s a lot of miles a day! How many hours a day are you planning on driving and in what car. I hope it’s quite and comfortable!

I am hoping to be driving about 8 hours a day (excluding breaks). I will be taking the Celica with me which, TBH, is a far more comfortable ride than the Supra. AshBhp
If you are driving by your self, you are pushing it CJ. 100 miles = 1.45 hr/min 540 miles = 9.15 hr/min You should aim for approx 350/400 day and enjoy the drive down

Do folks think that is excessive? Please bear in mind that up until recently I would travel 400 miles every Friday and Saturday
Pete
Nah - just get plenty of good story book CDs or something to entertain you. It gets very boring otherwise.
ivan
I'd take your average down to 60 personally Col. Room for error, holdups etc, etc.
SupraAyf
Great route CJ; just make sure you take loads of pics for us guys eh! Point 29 - 34: (Budapest to Beograd) is a good route but any of these locations travelled at night can be a little daunting if you haven't been there before! 34 - 35 (Serbia & Montenegro) Just make sure you take your own packed lunch for this leg of the journey and don't eat any of the local food at the side of the road (or small road side cafe's near the road) or else you'll be on the loo with 'worm' problems in a few days time. 35 - 39 (Macedonia) This is such an easy route and it is literally straight down to Greece. You have avoided the ethnic-Albanian regions (i.e the North West of the country) so your trip will be fine. 39 - 41 (Greece) is the main arterial road route and is easy to navigate. The Border Crossing Point (BXP) can sometimes be slow to clear so add on a few minutes to your equation for the borders. The approach to Thessalonica can be sometimes difficult and it is easy to end up in the port if you don't keep your senses about you;) 44 - 56 The scenery is out of this world but it can be bloody slow in parts due to agricultural traffic and heavy goods trucks. Expect to add a few hours to your journey but the views will more than make up for it. There are limited securty concerns IMHO apart from the open regions of Serbia & Montenegro where extreme poverty ensures that a strong criminal feternity operates. Best of luck good mate;) P.S. (EDIT) Colin, you seem to have Zagreb on your initial post but your plan does not take that in to account for mileage and routes etc. One other route that you may wish to consider is Switzerland - Italy - Slovenia and then in to Croatia as the Zagreb to Beograd road is equally convenient (albeit quite hilly in places)

I have now looked again at the Michelin site and this is the route they suggest (this time with miles not KM's). Does this look sensible? I am now trying to work out where to stop overnight to enable me to book rooms.
