Greenauto
Advice needed, Due to the fact that most of you guys have a second car or other car in the family I need your advise on the above. My dad is buying my mum a wee car and wants to know whats gonna be good to go for. As above it needs to be fairly cheap to run. It won't be brand new but will be as low milage as possible. Mums just wanting it for an economical car to get her from A-B in relative comfort, not high speed as would be my criteria She has two little Lhasa Ahpso's to carry about too so was actually considering even a little hatchback van for convenience. I suggested a Clio/Corsa/206 but any suggestions you can give would be great! Cheers Dave
Havard
My wife's company has a fleet of Vauxhall combo's and a few Renault Kangoo's. She reckons that the Combo is a far better drive are are silly economical with a 1.3 CDTi engine. She also reckons they are quite nippy around town. Cheap to buy and insure too! H. Greenauto
Cheers H, This is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. I've just changed jobs and I'm gonna be doin a lot of mileage till I can decide where I want to be (100 mile round trip each day unless I move) so mum has kindly offered me the car when she gets it till I get myself sorted out. Hopefully I'll get it all sorted quickly. Don't wanna miss out too much Sup driving time. Just need to get her the best car to suit her needs now. Greenauto
Haha I'll be driving it as gently as possible as it's not mine but thanks for the tip Edge. Was it just your driving style or was it an issue with the reliability of the van? Any one had any experience with the Clio diesel vans? She quite likes the style but I'm no convinced it'll be the most reliable since its french?
stuohy
My Mum's got a Honda Jazz... when I drove it for a couple of weeks a couple of years ago I managed to average 50mpg (according to the trip computer). Don't know how much they are to buy now, but they are rather good little cars (and my Mum has a cage in the back to transport 6 (yes, six) cocker spaniels). And being Jap, pretty reliable

Was it just your driving style or was it an issue with the reliability of the van? Our company has 40 of these and they blow oil coolers which mine did, which inturn takes out the cat, turbo and coolant system ends up black and needs flushing. Mine has done this twice. Layshafts go which mine did. Only get 30mpg from it aswel. Even though its well thrashed i thought vans were meant to take it. Clutch went to and has only done 70k miles. Its also knocking its balls off top and bottom end.
Soonto_HAS_soop
Bit bigger, but my Xantia HDi does 200 miles every weekday, returns over 50mpg, and I thrash theshit out of the poor piece of crap. I've had it for probably 6 months now, done 20,000 miles and all it's needed has been a few oil changes and a couple of dash bulbs, oh, and a few trips to the petrol station. edge
Best van i have driven so far is the new shape VW Caddy. Not sure how much these are second hand but they are great.
Greenauto
Sounds like I'll be ruling out the Transit connect for certain then! I'm thinking Corsa so far since I've had a Vauxhall before and know that they are easy to get parts for/service. I like the thought of the Jazz as its a jap car and I didn't realise it would be that spacious in the back. Cockers are bigger than Lhasa's and if your mum gets 6 in then there'll be plenty space for mums two. I'm guessin that the VW will be a fair bit more expensive to buy than the others but I'll look into it. Cheers guys

Greenauto
Well Mum and dad went out and bought a Fiesta 3 dr hatch back after all that. Looks like a nice wee car and I'm just glad that she's really happy with it. Must admit I'm looking forward to borrowing it too.
