Blu-Ray DVD on PS3

Got a few DVDs out on Friday (I wanted Borat, which was disappointing) and got Casino Royale just so I could see how good Blu-Ray really was.

I didn't actually expect to be that impressed. With normal TV (Sky) or DVD the picture doesn't look too great if you get close to the screen (LCD) but it's fine by the time you're sitting on the sofa. So I didn't think I'd really be able to tell much difference - when I put the DVD in, my thoughts were : I expect this to be the last Blu-Ray DVD I rent (they cost more).

After 5 minutes I've changed my mind. The clarity is amazing - switching source back to the other DVD player and it just looks blurred! I'm really impressed.

Unfortunately - I'm sufficiently impressed that I will now seriously consider Sky HD. Damn.

Got a 1080p TV?

I didn't realise until I bought the PS3, but apparently I only have 1080i.

The magazines seem to suggest that at my screen size I wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway (I think I have 32"). For the size of my lounge, the TV is really enough - however I am beginning to think about a 42". However - I don't want the hassle of mounting it on the wall again so will stick with this one for now (and it's actually only about a year old).

To be honest their is not that major a difference between 1080i and 1080p, there is a difference but its not major, one thing to remember is that we are only looking at the 1st generation of Blu-Ray if you recall back to when DVD was released (when they came in weird cardboard boxes) the picture quality was nothing like it is on the latest DVD's check out the Matrix on its original release DVD (its poor), just like the PS3 itself things will just get better and better....well if people actually start buying PS3's lol

P.S their not Blu-Ray DVD's.....their just Blu-Ray....the other format is HD-DVD (the better format) ;)

Dave, the resolution is the same, afaik the 1080p is encoded in higher bit rates, but if your source isnt being output at that level then its wasted. Having double the capacity of HD DVD your Blu Ray disks should have no problems with storage :)

Hopefully when HD spreads to the cable networks it'll be free like it is in the US (unlike satellite)... but I remember I'm living in the UK and expect another £20 a month ontop!

i just did a envelope at work other day with SKY HD free

suppose it will be a selling point for them.

Good job too.. shouldnt have to pay any more at all for it imho :) Especially on cable as they already have plenty of capacity to handle it.

But there's a sh!tload of places in the UK that can't get cable... ATM I'm on cable, but having to move out to a flat, which is recently built, but isn't in a cabled area (Strange being next to GCHQ ;)) I'd love to keep my cable (VM) broadband, and it does pain me to know I'm going back to poor copper wire worthlessness...

Cheers... As I'm a blind fcuker (Yes I've got thick glasses) - My mate who's into all of this told me I wouldn't notice any difference between 768 and 1080, but I figured if I was gonna go for a new TV I'd go for the best I can get, but now you've settled my mind a bit :

What content is available in 1080p?

Really, nothing at this point. Today's high-def broadcasts are done in either 1080i or 720p, and there's little or no chance they'll jump to 1080p any time soon because of bandwidth issue

Damn, I'm still working on a set of wheels for the Suppy, and a TT lump ;) - Which'll take me a while depending on the bank claim, and and then a long time to do both!.... So a big phat TV'll do me proud until then! And a PS3 :D

Pot, remember that article is a couple of years old.

Oh, aye (Went back to look @ the date)...

I'll certiainly keep it in mind when I'm buying, I'm positive that anything I get isn't a 768px job bleurgh...

I have a sony 46" LCD and would say the quality of Sky HD is pretty decent...I dont like watching DVD's anymore lets put it like that...the difference is kinda like VHS to DVD imo.

I think paying £200 quid for the HD box is a con though. And in all honest your only getting 2 movie channels and the sports channel in HD...sky 1 HD is a joke 70% of its output is in standard low-def.

That's interesting to know. I don't watch the sports channels ever (even though I pay for them every month) - although I don't watch Sky One much either, I would be upset to pay for an HD box and discover that.
