RedM
Right, I really like the guy who normally works on my car. He's knowledgable, honest and a perfectionist. He's also good value for money. He has researched everything that needs doing when swapping a JDM box for a UK. The thing is I'm having difficulty getting my car booked in with him for the gearbox swap. I've had the box in my hallway for over a month now, maybe even 6 or 7 weeks. I know he is very busy but I need the box swapped. I'm reluctant to go elsewhere because of the work he's already done and also, I don't yet have the same level of faith in anyone else locally. What would you do? michael
A good mechanic is hard to find around here - they exist, they are just hard to find. I think I'd be patient and get the job done right first time rather than risk repeat visits with someone learning what to do at your expense. jamesmark
I am in the same boat as you Martin but I lost faith in the same mechanic last year. Dave at DMB was doing kn1ghts car and he was getting pissed about by your mechanic too for 12 weeks i believe and Dave has passed him onto someone that does everything from basic stuff to tuning and Ross has sad that he is more than pleased with him too. Worth a check.

If you can trust him and usually use him I would get it booked in with him.If he is booked up for 7 weeks thats a good sign!
Jake
Swapping one auto box for another? It's a simple job, any half decent mechanic should be able to do it. Or is there something tricky about a UK Spec autobox that I haven't considered?
Pete
Maybe they're just not keen on doing the job for some reason? Why not just talk to whoever it is and say how you're feeling?
jamesmark
Maybe they're just not keen on doing the job for some reason? To be honest and Martin has said this to me too, he is an MR2 specialist and back when I was having trouble with him we both agreed that we just do not think he wants to deal with Supra's. Why not just talk to whoever it is and say how you're feeling? That is another ball ache, depends if he even answers the phone or returns your call. He ordered parts for my car, they had arrived and my car sat for 4 weeks and only time he actually done it was when I had a family emergancy and HAD to have the car to travel to Scotland. Ok those are 2 examples and does not paint a good picture but I agree with Martin he knows his stuff and is upfront and does not rip you off so can fully understand why Martin is in 2 minds. michael
An example of this guy in action - he sent me a message on another forum because he'd traced the history of my old car back to me and wanted to call to chat about a few things before doing any work on it. I was on the phone to him for 3 hours running through all the mods and having a general natter - he's a really nice fella but I think he's a bit too methodical and chatty to be as successful as he is But if it's your car that's in there and has his attention span you should be OK
