nuttynutz
Hi guys, right for those who dont know yet, i have had my supra for about half a year now. problem. whenever i use my AirCon it blows out this damp smell. im thinking maybe its because when transported from japan, its been sitting around for months, so this is why? but it dont seem like it is hoping that over time it will go. but everytime i use the A/C it still smells damp. its very noticable when you switch off the engine after use and come back to the car 5-10 mins later. has anyone had this problem, and how to overcome it? is starting to get on my nerves, and with two types of air freshners in the car it dont help it much. Thanks Ollie
Nick_TC
It's to do with the bacteria that grows in the A/C system, I think they can be flushed through and recharged and that should cure it, contact your local air con company, they'll be able to help. richardharmon
Yes, I think it has to do with some sort of bacteria or something, then again, the evaporator does get very damp during use. You can buy a spray from any good air con supplier but I don’t know about getting in to the evaporator to actually spray it? You don’t need to get the system recharged, the air conditioning gas itself runs round a sealed (well as good as) system and never comes into direct contact with the air that is being cooled. toyotasuprauk
Mine does this too. Usually for about 10 to 15 seconds when I return to the car after using the air con. Mines had a regas recently so that's nothing to do with it. Its not that bad but my Honda didn't used to do it. Does everyone's Supra do this? It you get something sorted let us know. michael
I had this problem until last week - I took the car to an air con place and they sorted it. £35 and 30 minutes 'work' Basically they have a 'kettle' and screw a bottle of cleaner stuff into it, this goes in the passenger footwell with a tube up into the system, they turn it on, it heats the liquid which turns into really fine particles and is drawn through the system. You leave the A/C off with the system on recirc at low speed, the car fills with a while cloud and after 30 mins you open the door to reveal a nice fog machine effect. Mine smells a little bit clinical at the moment but it beats wet dog with a hint of disease Well worth the effort IMO, Halfords are also selling a non-commercial version of the above, it's a Comma product for about £14, you open it, leave it in the footwell and then do as above, they are always sold out though, that's why I opted for a proper job, spraying a scent onto bacteria is unlikely to do much in the log run. attilauk
its probably a very good idea to do this cos leigonares disease thrives in damp air con systems:(

richardharmon
That kettle approach definitely sounds like the best bet, I would imagine getting to the evaporator is fairly difficult, also the kettle thing will disinfect the whole system, not just the evaporator. michael
It looked a lot like one of those steam cleaners you see on the crappy shopping channels - the guy said the little bottle of cleaner was £17 but he had no idea what was in it, there were no ingredients listed and the manufacturer wouldn't tell him - it had a smell like Dettol. richardharmon
I’ll bet they wouldn’t tell him what was in it because it *was* actually Dettol and they were charging £17 a bottle for it!

peter richards
ok guys listen up ,mines the same , had a tip the other day by an air con fella . obviously use on a regular basis, but when the air con is on turn the heater dial to hot for a few minutes, this helps to burn off that nasty bacteria that causes the niff. sounds logical , worth a try . post up results guys it might work . cheers peter:)
Terminator
Exactly what my air con engineer friend told me so I do mine once a week. Especially if the weather is humid. I have no nasty pong in the car, except when I am in it. I leave the car on turbo timer for 5 minutes and turn everything up full on recycle. It gets very hot inside. I think the smell is called Dragon Breath. The bacteria die at 55 degrees and above.
nuttynutz
ahh excelent, think i will give a blast at the high heat for 5 mins or so before looking up the yellow pages. and there i was thinking i was the only one with this problem.
toyotasuprauk
Maybe that's why mine hasn't been doing it lately, its been parked in the sun getting so hot? I'll give the hot air thing a go.
