Rob
Further to my post about the pipe rattling about at the rear of the engine bay, it transpires my expansion tank is empty and there is water all around the undertray, which I though was due to wet weather. Obviously, something is leaking somewhere but if I just want to top up until I get car into a garage, is there just one type of Toyota coolant (the red stuff) or will it be a special order? RICHARDA
Rob I think you mean the Toyota 4-life. I spoke to CW about this recently and he assures me that you can use other makes as long as it contains the same ingredient that the 4 life does. Terminator
Check you rad if no water visible I would use just water as a temp measure rather than risk damage, until you can get some red stuff. Good luck with finding the leak.
Barry
While on this subject... Where is the drain plug and how much does the cooling system hold?
MONKEYmark
when mine was leaking it turned out to be water coming out of overflow pipe on waterpump, new waterpump sorted it. also the big water pipe at back of engine started leaking when i tried to take it off to change, it would not stop leaking put jubilee clip on it and it stopped water leaking. Rob
Most of the water in the under tray appears to be around the air con pump area on the RH side. Odd though, just drove to Toyota to get some coolant, after putting a bit of water in, and the temp rose while sitting in very slow traffic, but then as it got to the red line it dropped suddenly. Did it again on the way home as well. lovatt
mine was doing that to, i think its because there isnt quite enough water in the system to reach the sensor as it is high up on the engine
lovatt
it was the rear coolant pipe at the back of the engine, the one that comes up the back in the center of the cam covers. it has plastic shielding on it. cost around £18 from toyota.
Rob
Update. Toyota pressure tested the rad and no leaks appeared, but they told me the power steering pump was leaking. I don't know if he was offering that as a solution to my dropping coolant level, if he was, he's an idiot. And 8.3km on the clock for a test drive for a minor service, seems a bit long to me. Still £158 is a better price than I used to pay down south.
