Wez
Hey All, Just wondered what peoples thoughts are on Alcon brakes. I was at the autosport show today and had a long chat about using floating 330mm disks with a 6pot caliper that would go under a stock 17" wheel, they had a setup from a touring car set inside a 17" wheel with loads of clearance and the pad to disk surface area was easily double what the stock UK setup offers. They currently do not have a Supra bell fitment for 330mm but could provide all the info for someone to produce them. He also explained the difference between floating and non floating seperate bell and rotor setups.
Paul Whiffin
Hi Wez, We've got an R33 GTR in at the mo with Alcon's on it, I can let you know what they are like when we've mapped it later on this week if you like? Ta

Nick
They're very popular in Japan, and apparently very good. I've never been in a car with them fitted though, so this is just hearsay.
Wez
When explaining how floating discs work etc he used a 17" BTCC wheel, they are also used on a JGTC Supra but with much larger discs.
Chris Wilson
If you are buying new brakes for trackday usage on a Skyline, Supra or 90% of road cars always go for floating discs, as the uprights and stub axles are weak and bend, casuing pad push back. Floating discs help enormously with this. A pukka race car has uprights and spindles (and wheel bearings) designed for hard usage, and don't, or at least shouldn't, suffer with this. Wez
Chris, have you heard of Alcon or had any experience with them, if so what are your views compared to AP and Brembo. I spoke with both AP and Brembo at the show but neither seemed interested in what I was asking for. AP dont make there own bells, they have a bell available for the Supra but it will not fit the 330mm disc, again they are happy to provide the info to get the bell made. Chris Wilson
I have Alcon on this race car of mine: ftp://ftp.chriswilson.tv/zeus_toyota They are every bit as good as AP Racing or Brembo, and I have good factory contacts. I can make bells, or even make a bespoke brake set up for your car, whatever you need. I did all my own Skyline and FD Mazda stuff, and loads of others over the years. Hi Chris, Do floating discs have any draw-backs for road use ? Steve. ( sorry Wez for the slight hijack ! )
Wez
Yes they do, if the floats get clogged up under normal use they loose the ability to float and they are noisy in operation, lots of clunking as they move about.
Wez
Chris, how much would it cost to get some bells made up to fit the 330mm floating discs on stock calipers?
Chris Wilson
Chris, how much would it cost to get some bells made up to fit the 330mm floating discs on stock calipers? About 150 a bell for the first pair, a bit cheaper thereafter as the CAD / CAM drawings would be already done.
Wez
Do you think this would be a worthwhile upgrade? There should also be an option to move to an alcon caliper later which would still fit the stock 17" wheels but have approx double the pad surface area. Stock UK calipers with decent pads in them will be fine on that sort of disc size if you feel you can get them under your rims. TBH decent pads in your current set up will see you through most track days for sure!
