Marco Posted June 12, 2004 Share Posted June 12, 2004 I was traveling to Belgium today. Everything was fine untill I drove on after refilling. I felt a sudden loss of boost and thought one of the hoses came loose. I stopped on the hard sholder to have a quick look but couldn't find anything wrong. So I drove further and then there was a whistling noise. The car became more and more difficult to drive,going above 3K rpm was impossible. I still had to go a long way, about 100km. I stopped at my old local toyota dealer end they had a quick look. My brother was there with me and he spotted lots of blue smoke coming from the exhaust. I was too busy looking in the engine bay! Damn that didn't look good Conclusion (so far) 1st turbo dead! I only had hybrids installed last year july or august! Why do they break so easily?! I was running 1.2 bar at most, most of the times just 1bar. I always let the engine cool down after a spirited drive, so that can't be it either. I'll give JPS a call monday and see what the warranty is like. Anyone knows even if there is warranty on the hybrid turbo's from JPS? I had JPS hybrids fitted last year and Leon said that when he was fitting them he noticed that one of the bearings was cracked so had to take them back to his turbo man and get another set. He said if it was actually the turbo or anything involving his work, I do have warranty on it. So thats good... The only prob now is that the supra is still in Belgium. The Toyota dealer doesn't know anything about the supra engine. So they can't check it out, unless they get some plans... I think the only solution is to transport the supra back to England somehow. Whats the best way to do this? On the back of a truck? In a container to have it transporter via a boat or something? How much would it cost!? How much would it cost!? Join the AA, RAC or green flag, Directline etc..... then next time your passing by call them from the garage? They will return it to you uk home, well as long as they dont find out about this thread I think direct line insurance cost £30 for a few days in europe. And I just found out I'm not covered for outside the UK, I should have informed about that earlier I'll wait untill wednesday when one of their best mechanics comes back from holiday. Looks like these turbos are having a quality control issue at the moment, as this is not exactly a common or documented problem for hybrids. I'm sure I read somewhere of another case of this (not sure whose hybrids), but may just be confused. In regards to JPS, Leon is probably the best at getting power from a Supra in the UK. However, it is a busy place these days, and that means the best is not always working on your car. On one set to go this was caused by the actuator 'bursting' and the pipe itself leaking so badly that number one suffers uncontrolled overspeeding After a while this will lead to a bearing failing - no matter how well made! That is why, when hybriding, from here on in we will only accept replacement turbos with actuators that can be tested by the turbo maker - or by Dude when fitting (he has the correct vacuum testing equipemnt) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
