Homer
Make sure the fuel filter is renewed too. Mine ran like a dog until it was replaced (it was well past its best). Whats the IC like? Are the fins starting to flake, is the view through the fins clear and unobstructed (look through a new one to compare what it should be like). Also, when you change the plugs ensure the coil pack connectors are in perfect condition, any sign of deterioration means you should replace them. They're the cause of sooo many problems further down the line.

IMO the Miami Gt replacement smic is an excellent 'value for money' option over a knackered side mount. Provided you understand they are not as a good as a proper replacement side mount you can't complain at that price. sorry for the numpty q here but coil pack connectors is that the things under the cam cover? the 6 or so plug things? also how to check if theyre on their way out? or is it just visually noticeable? They are the connectors that join the ignition wires to the coil packs (the 3 big packs connected to a pair of cylinders each). When you disconnect them there should be a white insert in a W shape, if these are split or look brittle then they should be replaced.
