SuperSupra
Sh*t, think I've been done. 'Bought' a new mobile off a guy on Ebay who didn't have a lot of feedback, and one or two negative, but didn't think much of it as I thought I was covered so long as I paid by Paypal. This is NOT the case in most situations and is very easy for the so called 'seller' to excuse themselves from the criteria. Apparently to be covered the seller must have over 50 feedback which instantly discounts this guy as he had only about 8 i think. Surely this doesn't make any sense whatsoever as anyone wanting to sell fraudulently can just set up a new account when they reach 49? I have paid a lot of money for this phone, and the day after the payment going throught the guy is now no longer a registered user of Ebay - twat. I have had no contact from him having sent 3 messages on Ebay and an e-mail. Now some may argue that I am being a little ott right now as I only purchased it a few days ago and is still plenty of time for the item to arrive, but a little coincidental don't you think that he's suddenly cancelled it and also has not been in touch at all? I'm normally so fussy but I thought I'd try and save £20 by buying it from this guy but instead it's cost me over £200 by the looks of things. Very pissed off about this, and REALLY hope I'm being pre-emptive in my anger. I have an e-mail address but doubt it's real. Only wish I could find out where the twat lives. Assuming I don't get it of course.
how_supra
Are the emails through ebay or direct? That does seem ridiculous policy on Paypal, are you sure thats right? Also read the ebay standard purchase protection programme, its not the ideal situation, but you should be entited to reinbursement through that scheme, although I don't know about if he's no longer a registered user. Ebay is full of scammer, and these sorts of stories are getting more and more regular.

Going to re-check the whole policy now but think I've gotta wait something ridiculous like 30 days before I can do anything anyway. I'm not sure exactly where I stand lawfully either, but you can guarantee if I don't receive the phone within a couple of weeks I'll be contacting a certain local services... SuperSupra
Oh it seems there is one avenue I had not checked - like you say the Ebay standard protection programme - I'll not get all my money back but might get half (around £100 possibly). Maybe I'm panicking over nothing but hate people that scam people out of money, and it's come at the worst possible time for me too! Wish he'd just send me my freaking phone! how_supra
I bought a pair of jeans of a scammer in April. They never materialised [no pun intended], next thing I know she was no longer a registered user. I didn't qualify for a refund because it fell under £15 [it was more the principle of the situation which annoyed me], so im sure you will get something back at least. Im certain you can claim a refund on paypal, it takes long enough for an account to get verified and up and running, and its not just limited to ebay purchases. What they will do is once youmade a complaint they take the money out of the sellers account and hold it until a resolution is met. So have you filled a complaint with paypal regarding the transaction?
how_supra
Also has the seller emailed you directly from his personal email account? Its possible I believe to change the settings [in hotmail anyway] to get the IP address...................... Also his invoice from ebay would have had a contact address on it? Kittyclaws
sorry to hear this, i was always warned to stay well away from anyone selling phones on ebay, a lot of them are stolen as it seems and the police are cracking down on this

Just having a proper good read of the Paypal stuff now. I better be bloody covered cos it's a lot of money that I don't have right now, and I really wanted that phone! how_supra
Im sure you can, always pay by paypal if you can, I've had it happen to me before, when people have bought stuff from me, and said it never arrived, so the paypal team retain the money sent until its resolved. If he's a scammer he's not very clever as he's used paypal. I could be wrong, but Im 99% certain you'll be protected
Marty
You may find he's been suspended for another reason mate, if hes been suspended it comes up as 'no longer registered with ebay'. I got suspended from no fault of my own, one of my items was bought by a scammer, and ebay suspended us both whilst they investigated. Weird how he has had no contact though. With him having a paypal account he may be genuine? didnt it give you his address when you won the phone?
SuperSupra
Looks like I AM protected but only up to a maximum payout of £120 minus £15 processing cost. half the money I've paid for it. It's better than nothing but still highly annoying. Guess I better keep my fingers crossed that he's just a muppet who doesn't know how to use e-mails and decided to close his Ebay account for a genuine reason I've added him to my MSN list and it has successfully added him so hopefully he'll log on, he won't know who I am so we can have a 'little chat'... Interesting point about being suspended you make though. Not sure why he would've been suspended but hey, maybe another possibility. I'm just keeping everything crossed cos if it doesn't turn up, I'll find him.......
SuperSupra
OOH! I've just noticed, it DOES tell you their address in the e-mail that says you won it. Never noticed that before. Someone's gonna get a quick phone call today.....
how_supra
Then when you're done post something to them - an empty packet or something, and don't put stamps on it, then he has to go to the post office and pay stupid charges and go through the inconvenience to pick up an empty letter. [thats probably more appropriate to smaller purchases............made me feel better anyway]

SuperSupra
I'm giving up on eBay. Full of thieves and con artists. Seems to be more an more often with things like phones though. smaller goods (with the exception of how_supra) seem to be ok. This is by a mile the most expensive thing I've bought off Ebay but doubt I'll be doing again.

garetheves
tbh mate it sounds like you bought a phone from a hacked account, the real user has since realised, informed eBay and they have locked it while they investigate. Without wanting to put a downer on things, i wouldnt expect to see the phone, the least you cam hope for is a refund through Paypal which you shouldnt have a problem getting. Did you use your credit card through paypal or bank account? If its CC just inform your company and they can reverse the transaction. I had this happen to me (the opposite of whats happening to you), a buyer bought an old phone of mine, paid through paypal then 2 days later was kicked off ebay. About a week later the money disapeared from my paypal account because it was from a stolen credit card and the real owner claimed it back from his CC Company. It really pissed me off because the only contact i had from Paypal was them saying that the transaction had been reversed. Thank god i didnt send the phone (didnt send it due to him being kicked off ebay, thought it was a scam). Ive given up on ebay for phones now. Ive relisted my phone over 25 times now and each time a scammer buys it. Anyone want a Nokia 8800???? (sorry for thread hijack). Hope you get your money back mate. SuperSupra
Cheers Gaz, sounds like this is becoming so common now I paid with my cc but I called the bank to ask if it could be cancelled and they said no as the authorisation had already gone through. Was a tad surprised as I thought especially internet transactions were covered? Might call them again, it was some guy who didn't speak much English. HSBC have Indian call centres does anyone know? Seems to be either an Asian person or a Scottish person every time I call.

npotts
Good idea mate. Let the dust settle and give the guy a chance to send the phone. If it turns out you have been conned, get the money back through Ebay. Still f*ckin annoying though mate!!
dini_the_owl
This person must have signed up for an account with ebay or he has used someone elses account, as he is now not a member i assume he will have signed up himself, to sell you must have a valid credit or debit card to which he must be registered: use this: http://cgi1.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?UserInformationRequest you will need to use the contact info option and enter username of seller plus item number and you should get an address and/or even postcode. if you can get only postcode or name, either use tomtom or for only name info use ukinfo 2003/4 or 5 will tell you everything you need to know....... then turn up on his doorstep one night with a large piece of wood and ask for refund, andy p.s might cost you a bit of petrol money and be sure to park your car round the corner, i had to go to mid wales for a T**T who ripped me off £200 for a mobile, i turned up on his doorstep not expecting to get anything back and i walked away with his telly and dvd player, still didnt get my phone or money though...........Idiots
