Max Headroom Posted October 6, 2006 Author Share Posted October 6, 2006 Turned off firewall and did a sweep for spyware yesterday (spybot - search & destroy) getting 20kbps. Turned out that the person had a 1GB download limit per month, when this limit was hit the speed went down to around 7kbps. Had me scratching my head for a while - Tried a different router and all sorts! If you read the fair usage policy for your ISP you may find that if you download excessive amounts at peak times of the day you can get your bandwidth capped. However they should notify you of this. From my email yesterday: Today, BT launched their new 'Performance Tester' system that allows end users to accurately monitor the performance of their ADSL line. The tester has been developed to provide a more accurate indication of the higher throughput levels experienced by many IPstream Max and IPstream Max Premium end users. It is also capable of testing all existing BT IPstream products and, based on the telephone number, will automatically determine the end user product and the test to be performed. The Performance Tester can be found here - http://speedtester.bt.com Should work on most ADSL connections. I had this from two ADSL providers that we're resellers for. Max Headroom Posted October 8, 2006 Author Share Posted October 8, 2006 Sorry for being slow in getting back, but I have been having download speeds between 3 and 81 kbps. It has made getting onto the internet very very difficult. Thank you everyone for your advise, what I think is happening is that my ISP http://www.plus.net is ungrading my line to 8mb and it is making the connection unstable for a few days, everything else is fine.
