PAS Probs! AGAIN!

Hi All,

Finally got around to paying my membership up YAY!

Now i'm having problems again

Having a bad couple of months really, firstly my car's air con compressor decides to pack up right before the heatwave we just had, then after some help off here i managed to get one to replace it only to have the crankshaft pulley shear off! I go to toyota and purchace a new pulley and get my mechanic round to fit both the pulley and the air con compressor, this got done and on the first start up the PAS pump is making a familiar noise (whining coming from the pump)... I know it needs bleebing so i follow all the instructions and bleed the system and it quietens down. I lower the car back down and take it for a spin and the noise is back with a foamy resevoir. I bleed it again, noise goes as soon as it's down on the ground it comes back with the foam.

I decide to replace the only two pipes i can obviously see are worn and cracked (the two from the resevoir). I replaced them and jubilee clip them and bleed the system again, noise went, came back but not as harsh as before still getting a bit of foam though. I would have immediateley said the pump was knackered but i only bought it brand new from toyotas about 6 months ago! If it has gone already then i'm going to SCREAM!!!!! Any thoughts on what might be causing the air to get sucked into the system like this? I've done all i can and my mechanic isn't interested in helping me at the moment due to domestics. Any idea's will be taken on board and tried.

Thanks in advance.

Your saying your getting foam, like bubbles? Is it quiet when its like this and is the steering working fine and smooth? It can be like that and still be fine, as long as its driving ok with no notchy bits or anything its ok. You'll find it'll probably be gone tomorrow!

I'm getting little bubbles, it's not really quiet ever though. It maybe gets a little quieter when it's warm but it still never completely dissapears. It's been like this for about 2 weeks now and it's still the same. The steering never seems notchy or heavy, just pretty normal TBH except for the noise.

The bubbles are showing you have air locks in the system, you need to get these out, makes sure its full and try lock to lock with the lid off the reservoir, put some old cloth around the reservoir lid in case it bubbles over, hold on full lock for a few secs then go opposite lock until the noise stops and all air is out

Air is being sucked into the pump on the intake side. Most likely the 'o'ring on the intake pipe. Replace it and rebleed. The other possibility is that the reservoir screen is plugged causing the pump to cavitate. Remove the reservoir, soak with Gunk engine cleaner to loosen the crap and then reverse flush.

Are you using the correct oil? Should be Dexron 2 or the equivalent I think.

Dexron 3 is ok to use, it has supereceded Dexron 2.

I just used power steering fluid from the garage, i'll have a look and see what it is.

I actually did this and it pumped all the fluid out and so i replaced it and it went quiet for a while but it still came back.

Which side is the intake side and where would i find the o-ring, i'm not a complete novice but i've not had the pump apart, and where would i get a replacement? I'll clean the reservoir out though and see if that helps.

What do you mean by pumped it all out....you mean all out the top of the PS reservior when you went from Lock to Lock while stationary? When you replace it you will get air locks!! putting a load of new stuff in the system will create air pockets?

Is this what you mean?

OK i been to Toyota and ordered the o-rings today, can anyone give me any advice on fitting them? Is this a difficult job, i can remove the PAS pump just to give you an idea of my competence (minimal LOL)! Thanks for any help.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just thought i'd say for the sake of others who have this problem. I replaced the o-ring on the intake pipe (the other one was noticably broken) of the PAS pump and the noise has vanished YAY! all that worry and bleeding and stress solved by a £2.99 rubber band! Thanks to everyone for their help and sugestions.

Think you use Dextron 3

Make sure you lift the front wheels off the ground and turn the steering left and right to bleed the system....

Hold in lock for about 10 seconds each time

Yep thats what I used.....makes a terrible racket going from lock to lock with air in the system, they should bleed out when you have done a few lock to locks after filling up....make sure the reservoir is full before you start turning though, dont want to run the pump dry
